Wow!! It's Spring Already!!

We are seeing more requests for cosmetic

surgery. Is it because we are entering into the summer, bathing suit, months or because of the seemingly upward slope in the economy? Not sure, but it does seem that ultimately self-confidence and self-esteem play a huge role.  Read on...

Oh, and don't forget, Susana Wong is doing her thing with permanent makeup and various facial peels, on adults and teenagers.  Give us a call.

Women Skip Sex for Skinny - Self-Esteem?

51% of women would sacrifice sex to be skinny, says

Fitness Magazine, who asked this question to 2,400 women. Dr. Jennifer Hartstein, on the Early Show on Saturday Morning, discussed a study that showed 61% of women think about what their body looks like while having sex.  She believes that both surveys indicate the self-esteem issues women have today. The article then goes on to emphasize society's need to build self-esteem in young girls, on things not tied to appearance.  CBSNews.com, 2/19/11

Is Propecia Making Bald Men Impotent?

           Bald Men

Two studies in the March issue of the  Journal of Sexual Medicine have found that between 5 and 23 percent of millions of men who have taken the drug Propecia, have become impotent or have lower sex drives due to the active ingredient finasteride (also found in Proscar - a drug used to help with prostrate swelling). The biggest concern is that many of these men will continue to experience persistent side effects, even if they discontinue the drug, says Dr. Abdulmaged M. Traish, Boston University School of Medicine.  If so, the irony is that men may stop using Propecia, resulting in the return of hair loss AND continue to be impotent for years following.  CBSNews.com, 3/21/11

UnderAge Tanning

The American Academy of Pediatrics announced it is pushing for a policy to ban tanning for minors.  (The World Health Organization and American Academy of Dermatology are already lobbying for the ban.)

Studies have shown that tanning in a salon under UV rays increases the risk of skin cancer and these lobbying groups want to protect children from unhealthy risks, comparing it to smoking cigarettes, says Leslie Balk, MD. Dr. Balk is looking for an all-state ban for under-18 tanning.

John Overstreet, executive director of the Indoor Tanning Association sees this as government oversight. He states that approximately 20% of the tanning salons have had to close down in the last year due to the increase tax on tanning and the recession.  He states the benefits outweigh the risks: The need for sunshine and vitamin D. .....SPEAKING OF THINNING HAIR

Anti-Aging Ingredient of the Month - TOFU

Biotin, generally found in soy products but also in liver and eggs, can promote hair regrowth. Try this recipe (which can be blended together to thicken the soup rather than to eat cubes of tofu) to get the health value of the tofu as well as that of ginger, garlic, sweet potatoes and peanut butter.

PEANUT SOUP WITH RICE AND SCALLIONS
(serves 6)
2 TBL roasted peanut or vegetable oil
2 lg onions, diced
2 lg bell peppers, 1 red and 1 green, diced into 1/2 inch chunks
2 teas chopped ginger
2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
3 lg garlic cloves, finely chopped
salt and freshly grated ground pepper
1/4 teas cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes, or more to taste
2 cups crushed tomatoes in sauce
5 cups water or chicken stock or vegetable stock
3/4 cup peanut butter
1 box or 1/2 carton tofu, preferable soft
2 cups of cooked rice
1 cup sliced scallions, including the firm greens

1. Warm oil in a wide soup pot set over high heat. Add the onions, bell peppers, ginger, and sweet potatoes, and saute, stirring frequently until onions have begun to color, 8 to 10 minutes, adding the garlic after the first 5 minutes. Add 1 teas of salt, some pepper and cayenne to taste and cook a few minutes longer.
2. Add the tomatoes and scrape the pot to lift up any brown bits from the bottom. Add the water or stock and bring to a boil; then lower the heat and simmer, covered, for 25 minutes.
3. Add the peanut butter and cook, stirring, until it dissolves.
4. Remove 2 cups of soup and puree with the tofu until perfectly smooth. Return this mixture to the soup. Taste for salt and heat level, adding more salt or cayenne, if you choose.
5. Serve over 1/3 cup rice and scallions to top.
