              Stem Cells - Breast Reconstruction

Women's Breast Cancer LogoThis is a VERY huge area being studied in plastic and reconstructive surgery!! Using stem cells (and the person's own fat) to help regrow breast tissue after lumpectomy or mastectomy. It is not in clinical trial yet, but the possibility is there.  Big concern that needs to be addressed is that as tissue and fat cells are stimulated to grow, they don't re-stimulate cancer cells.  But the potential is exciting and on the horizon!!  CBSNews.com, 2/21/2011

                                      DEATH BY (Silicone) INJECTION

The desire to achieve beauty does not wane, even during a recession. What is of major concern, especially during tough economic times, is the willingness of people to do have their procedures or surgery done illegally by a nonprofessional, using illegal substances. In her attempt to get a buttocks enhancement, a woman had silicone injected and died. It is believed that the silicone filled her lung and caused a fatal embolism. What is startling is that the injection was believed to have been done by a local hip-hop singer in a Hampton Inn near the Philadelphia International Airport. This was the second time the girl and her friend flew to Philadelphia to have this done. FoxNews.com, 2/14/2011

Melanoma - Will Your Young Doctor Recognize It?

A study at the University of Illinois in Chicago was done to see if 4th year medical students were trained to look for melanoma.  Actors had high quality tattoos (moulage), that looked and felt like a melanoma, placed on a finger.  They were told to complain of wrist pain.  Less than 1/4 of the 190 students saw the lesion and recommended treatment. Of the 56 that noticed it, 13 failed to comment on it or write about it in their notes.  Of the 43 students who saw the lesion and recommended follow-up or a biopsy, only one felt to see if the patient had swollen lymph glands and one student examined other areas of the "patient's" skin for other spots. No student offered the patient a full body skin exam.

The concern is that it is thought that medical students are not getting the necessary training in evaluation of skin cancer. FoxNews.com, 2/14/2011

                             Did You Know?

According to the American Dietetic Association, beer, consumed in moderate amounts, has been shown to increase HDL (good) cholesterol, lower LDL and reduce the risk of blood clots.  It also lowers the risk of gallstones and type 2 diabetes. Beer has also been associated with the lowering of risk of kidney stones, as compared to other alcoholic drinks, possibly because of the high water content and diuretic effect, as stated by registered dietitian and ADA spokesperson Andrea Giancoli. And it is thought that the hops in the beer may also slow the release of calcium in the bone, which is involved with the kidney stones.  Additionally, beer drinkers may have the added protectin of bone mineral density because of the high amounts of silicone in the beer.
