ALCL and Breast Implants? Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) in and of itself is very rare, but the FDA believes that women with breast implants may have a very small, but increased risk of developing the condition. It seems that it mostly occurs with patients undergoing implant revisions for late onset, persistent seroma. It has also been identified in a few women with capsular contractures or masses next to the implant. DON'T PANIC!!!
THIS IS NOT BREAST CANCER!! Also, there are an estimated 5 to 10 million breast implants and only 37 have been diagnosed as having ALCL, so the risk is very low. There is no statistical certainty that breast implants cause ALCL, nor is there any correlation as to silicone or saline, or cosmetic or reconstruction. The FDA continues to support that FDA-approved implants are safe. If you would like to read more about this, I've added the link. Plastic Surgery News, ASPS, 1/26/2011

Don't Worry....Be Happy
When things are believed to be in turmoil, i.e. the economy, healthcare, jobs, it may seem that happiness is elusive. here are seven ways to achieve happiness in the moment. 1. Plan a Trip - The excitement is in the planning, even if you don't go. It's the dream!! 2. Show Gratitude- Research shows that contentment lies in the recipient's reactions, rather than the kindness given. 3. Talk It Out - Research found that $1,300 worth of therapy equals $41,000 in cash; talking allows the focus to be on you. 4. Spend on an Experience - Buy an experience; you'll be energized in the moment and upon reflection. You'll be more happy than buying an item. 5. Surround Yourself with Positive People - Happiness is contageous. 6. Give a Gift - Be generous; but mean it. You'll feel so good. 7. Embrace Your Identity - Kids who accepted their ethnicity were more emotionally resilient. This acceptance is necessary for self-esteem. It may not guarantee happiness, but without it, things seem worse than they actually are. AolNews.com, 10/31/2010

Your Sweetheart or Your Dog?
This Valentine's Day, which would you choose? Most pet owners chose their spouse (84%) BUT 14% chose their pet!! AP - Petside.com poll. Unmarrieds were more likely to choose their pet over their significant other (25%). "I know it sounds insane, but I've had numerous relationships with women. My dog has never let me down" says Count Fidel Martinez of Akron, Ohio. Women are more likely to say the choice would be a tough one, though both men and women were equally likely to choose the spouse. CBSNews.com, 1/25/2100 |
Anti-Aging Superfoods
In our search to stop the signs of aging, we know that our diet holds the key. The second food in our quest is sunflower seeds. Although our genes determine when we will grow gray, the loss of hair color is due to the loss of melanin production that may be the result of copper deficiency. Other options: Crabs, oysters, cashews and almonds.
Homemade Cranberry Nut Granola
1/3 cup pumpkin seeds
1/4 cup sunflower seeds,
1/3 cup maple syrup
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cranberry juice
1 1/2 teas ground cinnamon
2 cups old fashioned rolled oats
1/2 cup chopped roasted and salted almonds
1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
1 cup dried cranberries
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Spread the pumpkin and sunflower seeds on a baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until lightly toasted. Set aside to cool.
Reduce oven temp to 325 degrees F. Spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
In a small saucepan, combine the maple syrup, brown sugar, cranberry juice, and cinnamon over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sugar dissolves.
In a medium bowl, mix together the oats, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and salt.
Pour the maple mixture over the oat mixture and stir until combined. Spread the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Stir in the cranberries and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until the mixture begins to brown. Cool completely. Stores in airtight container for a week. FoodNetwork.com, 2008 |

Married Men Are Nicer |
Is that because marriage helps improve their behavior or that nicer men tend to be married in the first place? Both, it seems.
A study over 12 years of 289 pairs of identical twins found that a higher percentage of men who married showed less antisocial behavior (i.e., criminal behavior, lying, aggession and lack of remorse) at ages 17 and 20. Of the pair, the one that was married tended to have less antisocial behavior. Since they are identical twins with similar genetics and childhood environments, it is thought that marriage helped decrease those bad behaviors. Dr. S. Alexandra Burt at Michigan State University says married men who spend more time with their spouses than their friends, may care what their spouses think and have more to lose if they continue their bad behavior.
