Season's Greetings from Albert Dabbah, MD PA
"Celebrating 15 years of Ageless Attitude"

To Our Friends and Family,
We wish you all a truly special holiday season! While you are "out and about" in the month's frenzy, try to sit back and "smell the hot chocolate." There is so much to be thankful for and expressing that to your loved ones is the best gift you can give yourself and them.
New things on the horizon... Many of you know Susana Wong, our permanent makeup specialist.  She is an aesthetician who has decided to also do treatments in our office, beginning Thursdays.  That should start rather soon and I will let you know when.
Also, our website is up and we are trying to load pictures.  Please feel free to peruse it and forward on to those you knowwww.drdabbah.com
DISCOUNT CLUB STORES CAN PUT ON THE WEIGHT
We know that Sam's Club, Costco and BJs give free samples throughout the year. But during the holidays, these club giants give samples of all the holiday goodies like pumpkin pies, cheesecakes, chips and salsa and members are taking advantage.  In fact there are "scarfers" who literally eat three meals a week at these stores and even have a method to their madness!  One gentleman has learned that he needs to begin at the back of the store to get the nutritional samples first. Otherwise, he says, the sweet foods at the front make you "full by the time you get to the good stuff." Another member made it a family tradition that on Saturdays he would take his children shopping and "have lunch". What makes it fun is the "sales advisors" (you'll be admonished to call them "sample ladies") are encouraged to give shoppers as many samples as they want.  The cost of Costco?  An average shop can cost upwards of 1000 calories and more than 54 grams of fat!!
What a funny article to read!! AOL News, FoxNews.com, 11/25/2010

                                            Plastic Surgery Reward
Competition to place into South Korean universities is fierce and South Korean parents look for incentives to maximize their children's motivation.  These kids want a more  "western" look with eyelid surgery to open the eyes and an upward tilt to the nose.  Apparently there are plastic surgery hospitals that are taking reservations long before the students take their exams.
Another hospital is looking to help the mothers, who have "suffered" through the years with food and support and worry.  It provides "a free Botox shot for the mother's wrinkles." FoxNews.com, 11/22/2010

Does HIPPA Cover You When You Travel??

As you know, these new airport scanners are creating quite a stir. Here's another one. Health care professionals are legally obligated to keep all health information private to protect their patients.  But what does privacy mean when you travel?
The scanners are able to show anything on the surface of the skin or very close under the skin.  So, breast implants and prosthetic testicles are easily seen, as are body piercings, catheters and colostomy bags.  There is privacy software that is to blur facial features and genital areas, though whose to say if the airport you use has them. Any secrets? Better tell your spouse or parent before you travel!!

             PASSIVE SMOKING IS KILLING US
(that is, 600,000 people worldwide).  Researchers analyzed data from 2004 of 192 countries and estimated passive smoking (second-hand smoke) causes, per year, about 379,000 deaths from heart disease, 165,000 deaths from lower respiratory disease, close to 37,000 deaths from asthma and 21,400 deaths from lung cancer.  The World Health Organization was particularly concerned about the 165,000 children who die, per year, from smoke-related respiratory infections, mostly in Southeast Asia and Africa. AND second-hand smoke had the biggest impact on women, killing approximately 281,000.
We know there have been bans on smoking in public places in the west, but it is thought that that is as far as legislation can go. But the British Lung Foundation is petitioning the government to outlaw smoking in cars!

getting political...
We, in the United States, need to value the healthcare in America. If you don't now, you will when it's too late.  Saudi King Abdullah seems to.  He is returning to the United States for additional medical care.  (He had surgery in New York in 2009). Although the reason is unclear, the fact remains that it is the United States that is the destination of choice for his medical care.
Did you know??? I didn't.
I, like many people, have switched to agave nectar believing it to be healthier than table sugar. You know... natural versus processed.  Well, agave nectar has a few more calories than sugar, 60 per tablespoon as compared to 45 for white sugar; not enough to gain weight since agave is almost 1 and half times as sweet and you can use less for the same sweetness. BUT, agave nectar is processed and contains fructose and glucose like table sugar (and honey and molasses).  Many do, however, have no added preservatives, sweeteners or chemicals.
And, by the way, it is not recommended for diabetics.  It was banned by the Glycemic Research Institute after several diabetic test subjects suffered serious reactions after consuming the agave.  Bon Appetit Magazine, 12/2010

BEET AND TANGERINE SALAD WITH CRANBERRY DRESSING
(trying to keep it light during the season when it all gets too heavy)
Beets and tangerines are a great source of vitamin c. Beets have fiber and are a good source of B vitamin folate.  They are also thought to be effective at flushing out toxins from the body.
3 2 and 1/2-inch-diameter red beets, tops trimmed
3 large tangerines
3 TBL extra virgin olive oil
3 TBL frozen cranberry juice cocktail concentrate, thawed
1 TBL raspberry vinegar or red wine vinegar
1/3 cup paper-thin slices red onion
1 large bunch watercress, thick stems trimmed

Place beets in deep large microwave-safe bowl.  Fill with water to depth of 1 inch. Cover with plastic wrap and microwace on high until the beets are tender (about 15 minutes).
Dressing: Finely grate enough peel from tangerines to measure 2 tsp. Cut top and bottom off tangerines. Cut off all peel and white pith, following the contour of fruit. Cut each tangerine horizontally into 1/3-in-thick rounds, removing seeds.  Whisk oil, cranberry juice concentrate, vinegar and reserved tangerine peel in small bowl to blend. Season dressing to taste with salt and pepper. Mix in onion.

Hold 1 beet under cold running water and rub off skin. Repeat with other 2 beets.  Cut beets horizontally into 1/4-inch-thick rounds. Sprinkle beets with salt and peper.
Arrange watercress on large platter to cover.  Arrange beet rounds and tangerine rounds on top. Using a fork, lift onion slices from dressing and arrange over salad. Drizzle with dressing.

It's truly beautiful! Bon Apetit, 12/2010
