SODAS AND PANCREATIC CANCER
A patient raised the issue of the study relating sodas to pancreatic cancer so I decided to take a look at it. The study, funded by the National Cancer Institute and published in the Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, found that drinking 2 sugary sodas a week increased the risk of contracting pancreatic cancer by 87 percent. Diet sodas and fruit juices were not part of the study. The results, while sobering, do raise questions. Over the 14 year study, only 140 cases (out of 60,524 people) were found to have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Of those, 18 had reportedly consumed 2 or more sodas a week,12 reportedly consumed less than 2 and 110 people reportedly drank none. Many do think these results (as well as others including no link or a link with women and not men) leave the connection between sodas and pancreatic cancer questionnable, though the study did account for factors like smoking, age, obesity and diabetes. CBS.com, 2/9/10 According to Richard Adamson of the American Beverage Association and a previous researcher of the National Cancer Institute, studies need to be done to correct for issues like hight fat diets and workplace environments. WashingtonPost.com, 2/8/10 Pancreatic cancer is, in almost every case, fatal since there is no screening test for it and, therefore, tends to be diagnosed at the end stages. Only 5 percent of those diagnosed survive 5 years. WashingtonPost.com, 2/8/10 The study may not have been "gold standard" but it does raise some interesting issues. Though no one wants cancer, this is certainly NOT one you want to be diagnosed with. Anything we can do to prevent a cancer with definite fatal outcome can only be good. |

IN THE NEAR FUTURE, YOUR NURSE MAY BE DIAGNOSING YOU
Many states may be expanding the role of nurse practitioners to make up for the dearth of primary care doctors. Nurse practitioners want to practice medicine without a doctor's eye. With the 32 million more Americans getting health coverage, it seems the health care overhaul is putting more money into nurse-managed clinics. The American Medical Association which supported the health care overhall, is against placing nurses in the position of a primary care physician. The nurse practitioners state there is no danger; that they can diagnose as well as a primary care physician and refer the patient on to a specialist, if necessary. CBS.com, 4/13/10

EXPLODING BREAST IMPLANTS
Implants manufactured by Poly Implant Prothese in France have been reported to be exploding. The French government banned the sale of these implants, but apparently 90 percent of them have been shipped out. The implants used unapproved silicone gel and the concern is if both layers of the implant break, the silicone gel could leak into breast tissue. FoxNews.com,4/12/10. FYI, Dr. Dabbah only uses FDA-approved implants manufactured in the United States. |
