Don't Forget the Men |
Men, also at risk for breast cancer, should not be overlooked. The incidence of breast cancer in women is much greater, and because of this, and because breast cancer is thought to be a women's disease, men are diagnosed late. The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 440 men will die from breast cancer this year. CNN Newsonline, 9/7/09 Male breast cancer is most common between the ages of 65 and 70, 1998-2009 Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, but can be diagnosed at an earlier age. The Few, The Proud and the Forgotten
who are they? |
Members of an organization of men who believe they were contaminated by high levels of toxins in the drinking water at their military base. The sick men are marines or sons of marines who were based or lived at Camp LeJeune between the 1960s and 1980s. They all have had breast cancer, which according to CNN.com, strikes only 2,000 men a year, and who are usually in their 70s. Tests done on the water in the 1980s shows high levels of solvents. Two independent studies have not shown a link, but these men don't buy it. Nor does Dr. John Kiluk, a breast surgeon at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. He is shocked by the commonalities among these men, which include breast cancer in 30-year olds. CNN.com, 9/24/09 |
Weight-Lifting for Breast Cancer Patients? |
Sometimes lymph nodes are removed during breast cancer surgery for cancer testing. Because this can cause fluid buildup in the affected limb, doctors have prescribed compression garments to alleviate the swelling. Historically, they have also taught no heavy lifting or resistance.
It is now believed that weight-training builds muscle strength and alleviates some of the problems associated with lymphodema. Obviously, it needs to be a structured program, but how terrific for women (and men) to be able to take control of their symptoms!!!
Make sure to discuss this with your lymphodema specialist prior to starting your exercise program. To read the study: New England Journal of Medicine, August 13, 2009. CNN.com/health, August 13, 2009

OCTOBER ALSO MEANS PUMPKINS |
The rich orange color of the pumpkins let you know this member of the squash family is full of carotenoids that neutralize free radicals. It is also high in lutein and zeaxanthin, which go after the free radicals in the lense of the eye, which may help against cataracts and reduce the risk of macular degeneration. Pumpkins also contain nutrients like potassium, iron, fiber and zinc and are low in calories. And don't forget the seeds!! One ounce of seeds contain 7 grams of protein, as well as copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and zinc. AND their oil is high in phytosteroids, fatty acids that are chemically similar to cholesterol and therefore help to reduce cholesterol levels in the blood.
CRANBERRY-WALNUT PUMPKIN BREAD
2 cups all purpose flour
2 teas pumpkin pie spice (you may want to add a little more spice or a touch more cinnamon or allspice)
1 teas baking powder
3/4 teas salt
1/2 teas baking soda
6 TBL (3/4 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup plus 1 TBL sugar
2 large eggs
1 cup canned pure pumpkin
1 teas vanilla extract
2/3 cup buttermilk
2/3 cup dried sweetened cranberries
1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
Optional: Mini dark chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350. Butter 9x5x3 (approx) loaf pan. Line bottom and 2 long sides with waxed paper. Whisk flour, pumpkin pie spice, baking powder, salt and baking soda in medium bowl to blend. Using electric mixer, beat butter in large bowl until fluffy. Gradually add 1 cup sugar, beating until blended. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time. Beat in pumpkin then vanilla. Beat in dry ingredients, alternately with buttermilk in 2 additions each. Fold in cranberries and nuts and chocolate chips if desired. Transfer batter to pan. Sprinkle with 1 TBL of sugar.
