July 2009 Newsletter
To our Patients and Friends,
We receive all kinds of questions regarding plastic and reconstructive surgery; many of which you might also be wondering about.  So, we decided to start a column addressing some of those questions.  I may respond based on my knowledge or experience with the patients, or I may pose them to Dr. Dabbah to answer, or both.
Most of you know Dr. Dabbah for his goal of achieving aesthetic perfection.  This applies both cosmetically and reconstructively and I will address the questions with this in mind. Also, be sure to check out our website, www.drdabbah.com, to gain better understanding of most procedures.
I hope you enjoy!!

ARE ANTIOXIDANTS ALWAYS GOOD FOR YOU??
Maybe not, if you have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Antioxidants may interfere with breast cancer treatment.  Chemotherapy and radiation work by creating free radicals within the cancer cells. These free radicals damage the cancer cells and even kill them. Though studies are not entirely conclusive, Dr. Brian Lawenda, a clinical radiation oncologist at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, thinks antioxidants may interfere with breast cancer treatment. Theoretically, taking antioxidants, which ordinarily protect us from free radicals that cause diseases, actually work to absorb the free radicals within the cancer cells, preventing them from doing what they are intended to do. It's vital that you tell your doctors EVERY medication or vitamin you are taking!!! Cnn.com/health
                    HONEY  Dr Dabbah Portrait
A wonderful woman I know, Donna, mentioned a terrific salad dressing using honey.  It sounded so great that I decided to look into honey's health benefits.
Honey is a great energy boost!!  It has been shown to contain 69% glucose and fructose, allowing for instant energy as well as maintaining energy on the long term. University of Memphis Exercise and Sports Nutrition Laboratory found honey to be one of the most effective forms of carbohydrate to eat just prior to exercise. It maintains blood sugar levels, facilitates muscle recuperation and glycogen restoration after a workout.  It has antibacterial and antifungal properties (and soothing for coughs) and contains numerous vitamins and minerals, depending on the type of honey used. And, honey also contains antioxidants.  (2004 University of California study; 2003 University of Ill study).

Donna's Honey-Poppyseed Salad Dressing
1/4 cup honey
3 TBL cider vinegar
2 TBL olive oil
1 small shallot, minced
2 teasp Dijon mustard
1 teasp poppy seeds
salt and pepper to taste
Taste and adjust seasonings.  Whisk until smooth.  Makes 2/3 cup. Use immediately or refrigerate.  Use with tender lettuce or endive, mixed with 1 cup  diced ripe papaya. Works well topped with chicken or shrimp.

Retail Therapy shopping may not be the best idea for soothing the blues!!
If you find shopping the "cure" for being down in the dumps, be aware that, though the happy feelings you get are real, they are short-lived.  We love the "high" but it's the spending, not the having that gives us that rush. And, once you've acquired the item, nothing new will happen, leaving the desire to shop again.  Gregory Berns, MD, PhD, neuroscientist and professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Emory University.  Also, a study showed that people who watched a sad movie then paid 300% more on an item than a control group who did not.  WebMD.com
My solution? GO SHOPPING and FEEL BETTER!! Just make sure there's a good return policy!!! (and think how great it will feel to see that credit at the end of the month!!)
aesthetically speaking...
We are continuously being asked why the patient cost for Botox is so varied among the plastic surgeons, dermatologists and spas.  Now with the introduction of Dysport, that question becomes even more valid.

Most people think of syringes of Botox and Dysport as products, which should have a somewhat equal value regardless of where purchased. This is not accurate; the purchase of these products is a service.  The procedure is completely provider-dependent; performed differently in different hands. The mixing of the toxin can be done differently and the placement of the injections is also a key factor. Another factor is the number of injections the provider determines necessary to accomplish the patients' goal.

Consequently, if you've had Botox injections and were not completely satisfied, try a different provider. You may be pleasantly surprised (and if done correctly, you WILL see that expression, just with fewer lines!!)
