WE ARE OUR OWN WORST ENEMY
A new study in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery shows that, although genes do play a role in how we age, the real causes are environmental and lifestyle choices. A study of 186 identical twins suggests that nongenetic factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, food intake and even depression are the culprits of how well, or not, we age. We also know that sun damage is also a tremendous contributer to not only how many wrinkles and lines we have, but also the quality of our skin. So, as we have grown accustom to hearing, a healthy lifestyle is vital to age youthfully. |
SUNSCREEN vs. SUNBLOCK
Sunscreens contain materials that allow a certain range of UV light to be absorbed. It is designed to protect against UVA or UVB or both. The SPF number does not necessarily give you more protection; it's protecting you for a longer amount of time (which is different for each person). Sunblocks contain metallic materials (titanium dioxide or zinc oxide) that deflect or scatter the UV light and act as a barrier between the sun and the skin. Sunblocks do not protect against UVA rays.
The best suggestion is a combination of both. And to stay out of the sun from 10 am to 4 pm, if possible. If that is not an option, be certain to use hats, sunglasses and a combination of sunscreens and sunblocks on exposed skin. Also, there is clothing, including bathing suits, made with SPF protection.
When the FDA acts on its 2007 "Proposed Amendment of the Final Sunscreen Monograph" we hope to gain better knowledge of the UVA rating system. |
NO EXCUSE FOR CROW'S FEET Now there REALLY is no excuse for the lines caused by squinting in the sun!! The FDA has just approved Dysport, the new toxin to eliminate the lines of expression. It is designed to compete with Botox and is expected to be available in June!! I will send out a quick notice when I have additional information. |
THE BEST - WATERMELON ON A HOT SUMMER DAY!!
Did you know watermelon is a valuable source of Vitamin C (disease-fighting antioxidant), lycopene (decreases risk of breast, prostate, endometrial, and lung and colon cancers), and potassium (which helps to lower blood pressure, regulate heart beat and possibly prevent strokes)? It is also rich in B vitamins, especially B6. So, enjoy slices of healthy cold watermelon this summer or try this Watermelon Gazpacho by Tyler Florence.
1 large tomato
1/2 serrano chile
2 cups cubed fresh watermelon
1 tsp red wine vinegar
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 TBL minced red onion
1/2 cucumber, seeded and minced
2 TBL minced fresh dill, plus more for garnish
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
Directions: In a blender, puree the tomato, chile and 1/2 the watermelon. Pour in the red wine vinegar and olive oil and pulse. Add the onion, cucumber and dill and season with salt and pepper. Puree until smooth. Pour into chilled bowls and sprinkle with dill, feta and remaining watermelon and serve. (Or for a grownup shooter, add vodka and serve in shot glasses).
