Welcome to our first monthly newsletter!  Our goal is to inform our patients of medical news or developments we think may be of interest or needs to be clarified, whether or not it applies directly to plastic surgery.  We also intend to make it fun and, sometimes, even shocking.   And, of course, an AGELESS ATTITUDE begins with good health, so get ready for some health talk.  We hope you enjoy!!

SAGGING BREASTS: NOT FROM BREAST-FEEDING
It is possible that breastfeeding may not be the cause of post-pregnancy breast drooping (ptosis).  A study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal (Sept-Oct 08)suggests that older age, larger pregnancy cup size, higher body mass index and a history of smoking were the significant factors.
SPICE UP YOUR LIFE  - Cinnamon
Studies suggest that certain spices, derived from seeds, berries, bark or roots, have high levels of inflammation-inhibiting antioxidant compounds known as polyphenols, which may block inflammation that may drive diabetes and other chronic diseases.  In addition to being one of the richest sources of disease-fighting antioxidants, one to six grams of Cinnamon daily has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes ( also, reducing triglyceride levels).  And, interestingly enough, the mere scent of Cinnamon improved scores on memory, recognition, visual-motor speed and coordination and attention.  Studies showed increased alertness and decreased frustration during driving.  SO, hang that Cinnamon car air freshener, add Cinnamon to your morning coffee or tea and try an easy, delicious new recipe:

Persian Rice Salad
2 cups brown rice
2 14oz cans vegetable broth
1and 1/2 cups roasted salted cashews, coarsely chopped
1 and 1/2 cups sliced pitted dates
4 green onions, sliced thinly
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup chopped fresh chopped cilantro
1/4 teas ground cinnamon
In large saucepan, bring broth to a boil over medium-high heat.  Mix in rice and bring to boil.  Reduce heat to low, cover and cook without stirring, approx. 40 min.  Spread rice out on large pan to cool.  Transfer rice to large bowl.  Add cashews, dates and green onions.  Whisk olive oil, lemon juice, cilantro and cinnamon in a bowl and add to rice.  Toss to coat.  Season with salt and pepper.  Can be made 2 hrs ahead.  Serve at room temperature.

DID YOU KNOW?  It takes a healthy adult only 30 minutes in a smoky room before profound blood vessel injury can happen, greatly increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
