September 2009
THE HOLY PARTNERSHIP

I was doing a children's message one Sunday on the topic of food, trying to illustrate how God provides for us.  I had a wide array of produce laid out and I asked the question, "Where did all this food come from?"  One little girl piped up and said (in a tone that conveyed, "You've got to be the dumbest preacher on earth"), "FROM THE GROCERY STORE!"

Well, technically she could have been right, but in her childhood naiveté she had no idea what it really took to make those items materialize in the grocery store.  Perhaps at her home there was no garden out back.  She never got to see, even on a small scale, the connection between good soil, seeds, sunshine, tilling the earth, rain, controlling weeds, harvest, and appearance on the dinner table.

We all know better, don't we?  We know that even though God is our Provider, God doesn't just come along and drop the food we need onto our tables.  There has to be a holy partnership between the God who provides everything we need to make things possible, and each of us who apply the labor and effort to weave those possibilities into realities.

It's no different in God's church.  Anyone who believes that spiritual fruit just happens in a church is just as naïve as that little girl who thought that food originated in a grocery store.  People will not be transformed by the love of Jesus, and children and youth will not grow in their faith, and people in need will not be served, unless we enter into a holy partnership with God and supply labor, love, and prayer to help weave all of God's possibilities into the wonderful realties of fruitful Christian ministry.

Where and how are you serving God right now in context of his church?  What possibility of God have you taken hold of to try to turn it into a beautiful reality?

We only have this one short life to pull this off.  There's no time for any of us to waste on lesser pursuits.

"We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work."  (John 9:4 NLT)

In service with you,
Tom

Thank you so much for the cards, visits, flowers, food and for everything that was done for Dick Lehman.  A special thank you to Pastor Tom and to the United Methodist Women for the meal they provided after the funeral.  It was much appreciated.

Thank you,

Dear Hope Family,
Thank you so very much for the prayers you have said for our family during Tyler's recent set back.  We know they work and are humbled by the love and support you continue to give us.  Thanks too for the cards and visits.  Knowing our church family is always there is a true blessing.  God is good!
Love, Jenni, Tim and Tyler Yoder

Thank you so much for the cards, food, phone calls and for everything that you have done to make the passing of our son and brother, Bobby Brown a little easier for us.  A special thank you to Pastor Tom and to the United Methodist Women for the meal they provided after the funeral.  It was much appreciated.

Dear Hope Family:
A big "THANK YOU" for all your love and concern for me during and after my recent surgery.  The prayers certainly carried me through as God saw fit to bring me through it with all my faculties still intact, thus allowing me to continue on with my work for you here at Hope.  The cards, food, phone calls and visits were phenomenal and I appreciate you all so very much.  I've said it before and I'll say it again .... "Thank God for my Hope Church Family".

A Note from Matt:

ChoirSing it from the rooftops!  Choir is back in session!  That's right,  you have the opportunity to rejoice in the Sound of Hope...and enjoy some food and fellowship!  For those who don't know, we rehearse on Thursday evenings and sing at the early service on Sunday mornings.  If you enjoy group music and singing for the Lord, we are a place for you.

And don't worry about "every week."  Hopefully it is such an enjoyable experience that you can't wait to rejoice every Thursday and Sunday! But...in the event you can't be there every week, that is perfectly alright.  Come and sing when you can!

The first rehearsals are September 3, and September 10.  Our first Sunday to sing will be September 13.  If you would like any more information, please contact Matt Zwyer at 419-276-0032 or mzwyer@gmail.com.  You can also talk to any choir member--they're all GREAT people!

And just so you know, our seasonal cantata this year will be for Christmas!  An awesome celebration of worldwide traditions, it will not only be fun, but also a neat learning tool and praiseworthy event! If you are interested in this program, feel free to stop by any time between now and December.

Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Psalms 100:1-2

Blessings,
Matt

Special Event and
  Mission of the Month
  for September

How many of you are aware of the many ways our conference and district apportionments are used?  Like most people you probably do not realize where in the world this money improves the lives of those in need.  The United Methodist Women will kick off the fall season with a church-wide event that will highlight one of the essential programs in the West Ohio Conference.  On Sunday, September 20, a representative from the UMC Children's Home in Columbus has been invited to our church and will present a five-minute talk during both services.  The Reverend Steve Putka will also have displays in Fellowship Hall and will be available to provide further information and to answer questions between services.
Following the second service the UMW will have a Soup and Salad Luncheon.  We hope that you will plan to attend this special event as we look at one of the ways that the needs of children are met in our conference.

Brown Bag Bible Study

Lunch BagLadies, our lunch time Bible study will begin again on September 21st at 12 noon.  We are going to be reading through the Book of Genesis this fall.  What a fascinating way to get to know God our Creator better!  Please contact Ann Ebbert by September 7th, a.ebbert@roadrunner.com, or by phone 419-877-5232 here at the church to let her know that you are planning to attend this fall so a study guide book can be purchased for you.

SAVE THE DATE
Parents' Forum Saturday, October 17th
    9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Hope Church and the Anthony Wayne Awake coalition are co-sponsoring a parent forum revolving around recognizing "risk behaviors" that our children or their friends may be displaying.  These could be indicators of substance use, eating disorders, becoming sexually active or other types of risky behaviors.  A multi-disciplinary group of professionals will present information about the AW community and the high rate of substance use.  They will also take questions from the audience.  Included in this forum will be the "Hidden in Plain Sight" display that was used last spring at a community meeting with great success.  It will help us see and touch items that can be present in a "typical" teen's bedroom.  These items may give an indication that something risky is going on in their lives. This information can then be shared with your children, as you deem appropriate, to educate them on what behavior to avoid or to watch for in their peer group.

The program is designed for parents of 5th grade and older children.  Studies show the average age in this area for initial experimentation with illegal substances is 12 to 13 years old, so middle school and junior high parents are encouraged to attend.  The morning hands on session will be followed by lunch and then an afternoon session allowing us to discuss the "so, now what" aspect of knowing how to handle these issues as Christian parents.  You can come to one, two or all three of these sessions.
If you'd like more information, please contact Ann Ebbert at Hope.

Wheel ChairHealth Care Equipment:The upholstered lift chair has been donated to Whitehouse Country Manor. Available for lending is one wheelchair, a three wheeled walker and an adjustable cane.  These are available for lending or giving. JOIN THE HOPE GLEAN TEAM!
Gleaning is picking up good useable food that the automated harvesters have missed.  The food is then taken to area food pantries where it is distributed to low income families in need of food.  The only skill involved in gleaning is the ability to bend over and put something in a basket.  The only cost is some time.  The rewards are a great feeling that in the name of Christ you've helped to feed people who are hurting.

Crops that are gleaned in this area are diverse, including sweet corn, pickles, kohlrabi, apples, potatoes, and tomatoes.  Gleaning projects take place at a variety of places and times, so you can pick the ones that fit your schedule.  Some are very close.  For example, Melinda Grant, helped glean sweet corn recently right in the Monclova area.  Gleaning projects have a starting time, but you can choose to stay any length of time that you choose.  You can go individually or as a family.  Gleaning projects provide great opportunities for teaching children how to serve others.

Gleaning projects often come up quickly, so our District office has devised a system of email alerts that can be sent directly to you and will even include a map to the site.  If you are interested in being "on call" to hear about gleaning projects as they develop, please put your name, email address, and phone number on the sheet located on the hallway bulletin board.  Knowing who is interested in gleaning will also help us communicate with each other to do some car pooling if you so desire.

I encourage you to give this simple but wonderful way to serve a try!
--Pastor Tom

Part Time
OrganAfter prayerful consideration, Dona Scott has reluctantly decided to cut her hours as Hope's organist.  She will be dividing her time between Ohio and Florida.  Because of this, we are in need of someone who has the talent, dedication and love of music and the organ to fill these "big shoes" during January, February and March.

If you feel called to help out in this important area, please call the church office.

Thank you,
Staff Parish Committee

New Computer Lab in Education Wing
ComputerChildren's ministry team would like to welcome you down to see the growing computer lab at the end of the Education Wing hallway.  Currently we have three complete stations up and running and are working on completing 2 more for the room.  We are still looking for the following items to assist us in this ministry: 2 heavy duty extension cords, 3 computer desks, 2 monitors, several pairs of computer speakers and multiple mouse pads.  Please make sure to notice the beautiful paintings that Leo Price did for the Day Care wing while you are on your way to the computer lab.  They depict the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.  They have already taught many people about Jesus!

FINANCIAL NEWS

Well friends, it doesn't seem possible, but the end of our 1st. three (3) year commitment to our Building Fund Pledge is fast approaching.  The official "end date" is October 31st, 2009, so at this time I'm asking you to consider "catching up", if you are behind.  I fully realize that the tough economic times are hurting us all, but try thinking all of the blessings God has given to you and respond accordingly.

Come September we are going to ask you to "re-up" by signing on for a 2nd  three (3) year commitment plan so that we can continue to pay off our beautiful new kitchen and the facility up-dates that our busy Trustees have been taking care of.  For this second round of commitments we are only asking you to donate to the NOW Fund, so that we can get our debt paid off in a timely manner.  The FUTURE Fund will be put on hold for the time being.     As of June 30th, 2009 our Construction Debt was $445,308.76, so as you can see, we have a long way to go before we are debt free.  However, we are being able to do what we promised to do - reach out to the community, especially through the kitchen facilities with our Wednesday lunches and also expand our ministries.  Our principle on the loan has been reduced by $12,677.00 YTD so we are on the right track.
For those of you who have not yet had the opportunity to take part in our Building Fund, now is the time to jump on board.  We'd love to share this great opportunity with you.  Just see myself or any Building Committee member and we'd be pleased to give you information.

Of course, the Annual 2010 Stewardship Campaign for general operating funds is also upcoming in the Fall and much more information on this will be coming soon.

If paying automatically by Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) will help you to manage your giving more evenly and economically, please see me as soon as possible and I will get you signed up.  It's easy to do and you'll never have to worry about making sure your "church check" gets made out in time.

Thank you all for your continued financial support to God's ministries and His Church .. Hope Church appreciates each and every one of you.  May God continue to bless each one of you.  Remember, "There, but for the grace of God, go I" and continue to be thankful for each and every blessing He so graciously bestows on each one of us.

Namaste,
Joyce Aldred

Mission Team

It has been several months since I last wrote an article regarding your Mission Team.  You are aware that we continue to request monies each month through our Mission of the Month.

However, our Mission Team does participate in local mission projects as well.  On April 25th, several of our members went to the Migrant Rest Center in Henry County to assist in getting the facility ready for the summer months.

On August 1st, Louise McVicker, Terry and Barb Zimmerman, Amy Lea (Melinda Grant's friend), and Melinda Grant went to the Migrant Rest Center and participated in the Farm Worker's Recognition Dinner.  Approximately 375 people were served that day.  They had children's games, health information, prizes and were served a meal.  Every school aged child was also given a backpack.

September 20th, Rev. Steve Putka will be here for Mission's Sunday.  We will learn about the happening at the United Methodist Children's Home.  Following the second service, there will be a luncheon.

Finances:  The following is what has been received thus far from April-July

April-Camperships $1,340.00
May-Bishop's Appeal $799.99
June-Migrant Rest Center $570.00
July-UMSO - BGSU $1,099.00

The Mission Team thanks you for your generous contributions.

Quilts of Love
Quilts
"Quilts of Love" is an outreach program in which we make tied comforters and give them to the Children's Services for use in their program.  We usually meet every Thursday from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. on the stage in Fellowship Hall. We'd love for you to join us (we have a good time).  For those of you who can't meet at the church there are numerous ways you can share in this project. We always have tops to be sewn.  Easy to follow directions are in the packet found in our box in Fellowship Hall or perhaps you love to do laundry.  We almost always need material washed and ironed.

We would love to have you participate in this rewarding project.  You do not need to be a church member to help. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Judy Bucher, (419) 865-2140; Sally Bergfeld, (419) 878-4285; Karen Dress, (419) 878-7216 or Louise Stedman, (419) 875-6266. Thank you for your consideration.

Great Food For All

GroceriesHope is hosting a new program in which you can purchase $60-$80 worth of name brand quality food for only $30.  Our next delivery of these food items is July 11, (pick up times will be 8:30am-10:30am here at Hope).

This low cost food ministry is open to ALL, and everyone looking after their food budget is encouraged to participate.  We want to serve our church family community as well as the larger Anthony Wayne area community with this program, so if you know of someone who would be interested in the Great Food for All purchasing program, send them this way!

Make sure to stop at the information table in the fellowship hall this Sunday to find out more about the volunteer opportunities that this ministry will have available as well as find out how you can place an order!

Bones of the church
The "body" of a church has four kinds of bones:

1. The WISHbones are those folks who spend all their time wishing someone else would do all the work.

2. The JAWbones are those who do all the talking and very little else.

3. The KNUCKLEbones are those who knock everything anyone else tries to do.

4. The BACKbones are those who get under the load and get the work done.

What kind of bone are you?
