  LEADERSHIP QUEST
July 11-19, 2009

We left the city.  We left cell phone range.  We left paved roads.  We left indoor plumbing.  Unfortunately we DIDN'T leave the rain, the cold, or those pesky Minnesota mosquitoes!  I've done a fair amount of camping in my life, but my first trip to Wilderness North, the Tentmaker camp in northern Minnesota, was about as rustic as I have experienced.  Beyond the living in platform tents and the outhouse experience, there was the rather unique "shower facilities."  A wood fire was built under a 50 gallon drum filled with water.  You drew some hot water from that drum into a five gallon bucket and evened it out by adding cold water from another drum.  Then you and your bucket went into an open-to-the-sky cubicle and showered yourself with a milk jug scoop.  I know that sounds horrifying to some of you, but I have to admit, I was amazed what a wonderful feeling shower you can get that way, even in 50 to 60 degree weather.  (Not that I want to continue that regimen at home...)

It wasn't all austerity, though.  The food was fantastic!  Nothing fancy-but it was all eaten outdoors, where food always tastes best.  And hot coffee after a cold wet night tasted absolutely heavenly.  The youth ground wheat into whole wheat flour and we baked our own fresh bread, which was also out of this world!

The best part of the experience, though, was the youth and the leaders and the leadership training that took place.  You would have been very proud, as I was, of the excellent teaching done by Patty Bringolf and Ann Ebbert.  Patty also led the music for the week.  The youth were amazing-very engaged, very cooperative, very little complaining despite the difficult week of weather we had.  Tim Lance, Mallory Spieth, and Adrienne Isaacs attended from Hope.  They were joined by some other top notch youth from Findlay St. Paul U.M.C. and two churches from Minnesota.

Leadership Quest helps youth examine in very intentional ways what God is calling them to be and do with their lives.  It gives them material to learn and skills to practice, but more importantly space and quiet in which to think, dream, and pray.  The long term results of this camp will be determined by how each youth decides to internalize and apply the lessons they learned in their walk with Christ and the ways they decide to serve him with their lives.  I think some excellent seeds were planted, and I anticipate that God's Kingdom will see excellent fruit.

Our youth and leaders were able to have this experience because many of you have chosen to support the ministries of Hope Church with your regular and generous gifts.  Can I tell you how much I appreciate your life changing faithfulness?  I doubt that I adequately can, but I believe that some day God will.

Yours for growing Christian leaders,
Tom

CHURCH STAFF POSITIONS AVAILABLE

The Hope Church Staff-Parish Relations Committee is seeking qualified applicants for two part-time staff positions: Children's Discipleship Director and Youth Discipleship Director.  The Position Results Descriptions are posted above the drinking fountain in Fellowship Hall.  The positions are for 24 hours per week.  A mature faith in Christ and a love for children and youth are a must.  A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required.  A bachelor's degree is preferred, but commensurate work experience will be considered.  Applicants may give resumes to Scott Giest, Staff-Parish chair, or Pastor Tom, or mail them to the church office.

[Note to Hope members: The Staff-Parish Relations Committee decided to divide the Children's and Youth Discipleship Director position as previously designed into two part-time positions so that each staff member could concentrate more fully on the needs of their particular age group.]

Update on Building Committee Progress

The Building Committee met on July 9 and approved the following projects:
1.     Lower the ceiling in Fellowship Hall
2.     Upgrade the sound system
3.     Upgrade the lights in the front parking lot
4.     Replace the double doors between
Fellowship Hall and the Day Care
5.     Insulate the east wall of the CLC from the
Nursery to the Choir Room (including the
north wall of the Choir Room-excluding the
        Library wall)
6.     Replace the boiler (which is 40+ years old)
        serving the Education Wing
In addition to the above we are still holding back money to finish the purchase of land behind the Fire Station.
These projects will be completed under the supervision of the Trustees with help from individual members of the Building Committee and the congregation.
After more than five years the Building Committee considers this phase of expansion to be complete.  We are most appreciative of the prayers and support from the congregation during this process and feel that God's will has been followed to the best of our ability.
In God's Service,
Hope's Building Committee 2004-2009

FALL RISK SCREENING

fallHave you or someone you know had a fall recently?  Do you know that falls are the most common reason for hospital admissions in older adults?  Every 18 minutes an older adult is seen in the emergency room because of a fall.  Fear of falling is a major concern of older adults.  More than one third of adults over 65 years of age fall each year.  Of that number, 35% will not recover to their pre-injury level of functioning.

Medicare now recognizes the value of treating people before they have a fall, and provides coverage for treatment to those individuals found to be at risk for falls.  A screen takes approximately 15 minutes, is free and is performed by a physical therapist.

We will be offering free Fall Risk Screens here at church on Tuesday, August 4th from 10:00am - Noon.  There is a sign up sheet in Fellowship Hall or you can call Carol Streight at 419.877.5850 for an appointment.

OPEN HOUSE PICNIC

STEPPIN' OUT FOR WORSHIP!

No, literally-that's what we're doing!  We're going to step out the side door of our sanctuary and worship in God's great cathedral right on our own front lawn!  God has blessed us with a beautiful setting for our church and we rarely get outdoors to enjoy it.

So...Aug. 9 we will gather in "the notch" where our sanctuary and Christian Ed. Wings meet.  There is some natural shade from the trees there and we'll add our canopy.  Wear outdoor summer clothes, including your favorite Hawaiian shirt if you have one!   You can bring a lawn chair for added comfort, but folding metal chairs will also be provided.

Immediately after worship, we will have an old fashioned church potluck picnic right in the same area.

Please bring the following according to the first letter of your last name:
          A-L   Main dish and dessert
L-Z    Main dish and salad or side dish
Dishes that need to be kept warm or cold can be kept in the church kitchen until meal time.  We will provide table service and beverages.

So join us!  It would also be a great opportunity to invite that friend or neighbor who's been on your heart.

The 9:00 a.m. service will be held indoors as usual on Aug. 9 for those who do not wish to venture outdoors.

If you have questions before this time, please connect with Ann Ebbert or Pastor Tom here at the church.

Mission Project
Hannah's Socks
HannahHannah's Socks is a non-profit organization focused on providing clothing necessities to the less fortunate in Toledo, Ohio; Cincinnati, Ohio; and their neighboring communities. Hannah's Socks collects donated materials in the form of men's, women's and children's socks and undergarments, then leverages partnerships with local shelters for distribution to both the homeless and to victims of domestic violence. In addition, we support programs serving under-privileged children. (Read More...)
There is a box in Fellowship Hall, if you can donate socks.  We will take socks for everyone but men's sock are most in need for the Cherry Street Mission, so that is going to be our focus at this time.  The socks must be new, no used socks please.

Mission of the Month - August
Medical Mission Trip to Nuevo Progreso Mexico

The Mission of the Month for August is the Medical Mission to Mexico. This medical mission team is lead by Jo Powers. The mission is set for October. Your donations help with traveling expenses and the purchase of medical supplies. Thanks for considering your support of this yearly mission in serving our Lord and Savior.

Hope has a team that will be leaving on a Medical Mission to Mexico in October. They are part of a group that will provide medical procedures, testing, and medicines for people in the small villages in this area of Mexico. All the medicines and tests performed must be purchased in Mexico with cash donations the group takes with them on this mission. . If you would like to make a donation for our August Mission, which will provide the group with money for medicines and procedures for this trip, please do so, as soon as possible. Also, please keep the group in your prayers as they minister and help the sick in these villages.

FINANCIAL NEWS

Well friends, it doesn't seem possible, but the end of our 1st. three (3) year commitment to our Building Fund Pledge is fast approaching.  The official "end date" is October 31st, 2009, so at this time I'm asking you to consider "catching up", if you are behind.  I fully realize that the tough economic times are hurting us all, but try thinking all of the blessings God has given to you and respond accordingly.

Come September we are going to ask you to "re-up" by signing on for a 2nd  three (3) year commitment plan so that we can continue to pay off our beautiful new kitchen and the facility up-dates that our busy Trustees have been taking care of.  For this second round of commitments we are only asking you to donate to the NOW Fund, so that we can get our debt paid off in a timely manner.  The FUTURE Fund will be put on hold for the time being.     As of June 30th, 2009 our Construction Debt was $445,308.76, so as you can see, we have a long way to go before we are debt free.  However, we are being able to do what we promised to do - reach out to the community, especially through the kitchen facilities with our Wednesday lunches and also expand our ministries.  Our principle on the loan has been reduced by $12,677.00 YTD so we are on the right track. For those of you who have not yet had the opportunity to take part in our Building Fund, now is the time to jump on board.  We'd love to share this great opportunity with you.  Just see myself or any Building Committee member and we'd be pleased to give you information.

Of course, the Annual 2010 Stewardship Campaign for general operating funds is also upcoming in the Fall and much more information on this will be coming soon.

If paying automatically by Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) will help you to manage your giving more evenly and economically, please see me as soon as possible and I will get you signed up.  It's easy to do and you'll never have to worry about making sure your "church check" gets made out in time.

Thank you all for your continued financial support to God's ministries and His Church. Hope Church appreciates each and every one of you.  May God continue to bless each one of you. Remember, "There, but for the grace of God, go I" and continue to be thankful for each and every blessing He so graciously bestows on each one of us.

Namaste,
Joyce Aldred
Financial Secretary

West Ohio Annual Conference Report
by Joan Nofzinger
The theme of the 2009 Annual Conference was Love In Action.  The four areas of focus are:

1.  Developing Leaders
2.  Creating places for new people
3.  Eliminating Poverty
4.  Improving Health Globally

The Love In Action offering goes towards funding this.

I liked the Executive Pastor of the Ginghamsburg Church who shared some unusual ministries with us:  She told of a group who had a pet ministry and they took them to nursing homes and shut in's for others to enjoy.

Also a Broken Chains Motorcycle ministry.  They took in a lover of motorcycles who was confined to a wheel chair.  After Sunday worship, they took him out to eat and then riding.  He did this for about a year before he passed away.

There was a man who traveled a lot in business, but was always too busy to accept a task at church.  But a doctor who made trips to the Carribean to heal the sick, convinced him to go along with him.  While there, he discovered extreme poverty and put his business skills to work.  He developed Micro Business, helping a family who had bee hives but no way to expand their business.  With $200.00 he helped them increase their hives to where they now ship honey around the world.  With another $200.00, he helped a chicken farmer to build fences and buildings to increase his flock; more baby chicks, eggs and fryers for food.  This man is now making his 6th trip to the Carribean working and guiding the Micro Business.

The music is always good too.  We enjoyed the Ginghamsburg UM Church Praise Team and especially an African orphans children choir, ages 5-8, who sang and danced, and choreographed!  Amazing!  And of course our own praise team, Unchained.

It was a very nice conference and I was glad to have represented Hope UM Church!

Thank you!
Joan

West Ohio Annual Conference Report
by Carol Roach

A highlight of the week was the presentation of the school kits put together by individual congregations. Each was valued at $15.00. What  a great moment as people streamed down the aisles to joyful music carrying their school kits, adding them to the pile on the stage that had already been contributed. As of two weeks ago, 10,600 school kits had been collected at a worth of $159,000 plus $108,692 in monetary gifts, plus $116,000 in pledges,  for a total of $383,692 for the Love First Offering.

An interesting part of the Conference leadership is a committee under the area of the Inclusive Body of Christ led by Rev. Waverly Early. Each event at Annual Conference was evaluated and given points regarding inclusiveness.  When the committee originated, much work needed to be done to make sure each race, gender, age, and other aspects of inclusiveness were represented.  Each year the point score increases as we strive toward valuing and including each person.

How proud I was to see Hope Church represented  at Annual Conference. Pastor Becky Schofield of First United Methodist Church in Bowling Green and Pastor Karen Shepler, senior pastor of Monroe Street United Methodist Church in Toledo grew up at Hope. They both had a part in the general sessions. Our group Unchained played Wednesday night in the gazebo by Lake Erie. They drew an appreciative audience despite the lack of lights in the gazebo. As the sun set over the water the group faded from view, but the music carried on. Heading the busy area of communications, our Lisa Streight did an unbelievable job. Assembling and producing all the paper communication for over 2000 people, organizing and co-ordinating all video presentations, and streaming all sessions to all 48 states was only a part of her responsibilities. So well done.

It was a great week.

Camp Hope
summer schoolJust a reminder for parents about Camp Hope.  Please pick your children up in the youth room each Sunday as soon as service is over.  In that way the children are able to circulate with you and meet the other adults at Hope Church and/or have a snack.  Also, the Camp Hope teachers can rest assured that they will be able to make their other commitments (lunch, a nap!) in a timely fashion on Sundays.  Our Summer Schedule is as follows:
August 2 - Bringing others to Church, Jody Schilling and Bobbi Vaughan
August 8 - Summer fun & games day, (Outdoor Worship) Clif Vaughan
August 16 - No Camp Hope, families enjoy worshipping together

Make sure to ask your children for their take home papers so your can continue to discuss the topics they are learning in Sunday school once you get home!

Single Parenting
We are beginning a new small group revolving around the special needs and life issues of single Christians.  We will be doing fun and fellowship in the Summer and classes will begin in the Fall.  If you might be interested in participating, or would like to have input in this new area of ministry, please contact Mandy Myers at 419-270-0329.

Quilts of Love
Quilts
"Quilts of Love" is an outreach program in which we make tied comforters and give them to the Children's Services for use in their program.  We usually meet every Thursday from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. on the stage in Fellowship Hall. We'd love for you to join us (we have a good time).  For those of you who can't meet at the church there are numerous ways you can share in this project. We always have tops to be sewn.  Easy to follow directions are in the packet found in our box in Fellowship Hall or perhaps you love to do laundry.  We almost always need material washed and ironed.

We would love to have you participate in this rewarding project.  You do not need to be a church member to help. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Judy Bucher, (419) 865-2140; Sally Bergfeld, (419) 878-4285; Karen Dress, (419) 878-7216 or Louise Stedman, (419) 875-6266. Thank you for your consideration.

Great Food For All

GroceriesHope is hosting a new program in which you can purchase $60-$80 worth of name brand quality food for only $30.  Our next delivery of these food items is July 11, (pick up times will be 8:30am-10:30am here at Hope).

This low cost food ministry is open to ALL, and everyone looking after their food budget is encouraged to participate.  We want to serve our church family community as well as the larger Anthony Wayne area community with this program, so if you know of someone who would be interested in the Great Food for All purchasing program, send them this way!

Make sure to stop at the information table in the fellowship hall this Sunday to find out more about the volunteer opportunities that this ministry will have available as well as find out how you can place an order!

Feeding America's Hungry

Dear Friends,

Thank you for partnering with the Society of St. Andrew to feed hungry children and adults here in the U.S.!  We have received your gift totaling $795.00, which you generously gave in the first six months of this year.  I am pleased to send you a Partner Certificate to recognize your significant investment in our ministry.  Our partner churches are part of an essential network of supporters that stretches across our nation and we are very grateful for each one's support.

As our partner we ask that you keep the Society of St. Andrew's mission in your prayers.  Again, thank you for helping us Glean America's Fields and Feed America's Huntry in the name of Jesus Christ.

A fishy excuse
Two men were in a boat fishing on a Sunday morning. "I suppose we should have gone to church this morning," said one man. "Don't you feel a wee bit guilty about it?"

"Nope," said the other, "besides, I couldn't have gone anyway. My wife's sick in bed today."
