Dear :
WHERE IS YOUR FOCUS?
Recently, I've been introduced by my sons to the sport of motorcycle riding. I know, I know-I've spend half my adult life telling my kids how dangerous those things are. Of course, when they were out on their own, Gretchen and I had no control over the matter, so both boys promptly got motorcycles and began egging me on to join them. I admit I am a real sucker when it comes to things that help me stay connected to my kids in whatever way I can. So, I thought I should at least give it a try. Aaron began giving me some lessons in a parking lot, I got my learner's permit so I could try things out on the country roads, and when I finally got over feeling scared stiff, I realized that I was really enjoying it!
Knowing there are inherent dangers in this sport, I immediately signed up to take the Ohio Motorcycle Safety Course, which provides both book knowledge of proper riding techniques and safety issues and also several days of actual riding, with instructors watching your every move and coaching you on how to do things better. One of the things they stressed over and over is that your motorcycle will always go where you are looking. So, surprisingly, the most important component of making safe turns, curves, swerves, and stops is the position of your head and what you train yourself to keep your eyes on.
I've thought about that a lot since taking that course, and about how that applies not only to motorcycling riding, but all of life. We tend to go in the direction on which we focus. That's especially true when it comes to the "eyes of our heart." That fact speaks volumes about how important it is to keep Jesus right before our spiritual eyes each day. Daily prayer and Bible reading helps this happen, as well as regular worship. God doesn't instruct us to do these things for his sake, but the safety of our own souls.
It's SO easy to get distracted, so let's train ourselves to keep our eyes on Jesus! "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith..." (Hebrews 12:2)
In Him,
Tom Hoover, pastor | |

United Methodist History Buffs Wanted
Recently a committee from the United Methodist Historical Society of Ohio revised a booklet on the United Methodist Historic Places in Ohio. The state is divided into five zones with the U. M. historic sites listed for each zone. A booklet is available in a pocket on the bulletin board by the kitchen door. Take a look. If by chance you visit any of these sites, please give the Historical Committee a short review.

Mission of the Month - July
United Methodist Student Organization
The mission of the United Methodist Student Organization is to share the light and love of Christ with the BGSU community through discipleship, fellowship and a community-based faith." UMSO has five areas of concentration as we minister to individuals and the campus community: small group ministry, ARISE (our twice a month large group gatherings, which include a meal, worship and college sensitive program), social activities, mission and service, and a local church connection. UMSO is supported by five United Methodist churches and the West Ohio conference of the United Methodist Church.
Who are we? The main objective of the UMSO is to create opportunities for BGSU students and the campus to experience the light and love of Christ in the form of relationships, social events, worship, retreats, mission trips, and outreach activities. We are made up of students from a variety of spiritual traditions, not all of our membership claims to be United Methodist. We welcome all persons, no matter what their spiritual background or journey. Our activities and events are open to everyone. The ministry is led and directed by a student leadership team and three advisors. The ministry is supported by an advisory board made up of members of the five supporting churches.

Summer Parable
Now it came to pass that, as the time for Summer vacation drew near, a certain member of the church bethought him of cool streams where fish were found, and his children thought of sandy beaches by the sea, and his wife had scenes of lofty mountains in her head. And this parishioner spoke and said: "Lo the hot days cometh and my work lieth heavily upon me. Come, let us depart and go where fishes do bite, and where the cool winds bring refreshment and the land is beautiful about us." "Thou speakest words of wisdom," said his wife. "Yet three, nay, even four things must we do ere we leave." "Three things I think of, but not a fourth, " said her husband; "that we ask our neighbors to ministers unto our flowers, that we arrange for our grass to be mowed and watered, that we have our mail forwarded; but no other thing cometh to mind." "The Fourth is like unto the other three, but greater than all," said his spouse, "Even this: that thou dig into thy purse and pay the church pledge, in order that the good name of the church be preserved, that the heart of the treasurer be made glad, and that it may be well with our souls. For verily I say unto thee, thou hast more money now that thou wilt have when thou dost return." And the husband replied, "Verily, thou art noble and wise among women." And he did pay his pledge for the summer, and the treasurer rejoiced greatly, saying, "Of a truth, there are those who care greatly for the good of the church." And it was so!! So pencil in the dates on your calendar and be on the look out for sign up forms coming out soon! If you have any questions, contact Ann Ebbert at a.ebbert@roadrunner.com or at the church. Quilts of Love
"Quilts of Love" is an outreach program in which we make tied comforters and give them to the Children's Services for use in their program. We usually meet every Thursday from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. on the stage in Fellowship Hall. We'd love for you to join us (we have a good time). For those of you who can't meet at the church there are numerous ways you can share in this project. We always have tops to be sewn. Easy to follow directions are in the packet found in our box in Fellowship Hall or perhaps you love to do laundry. We almost always need material washed and ironed.
We would love to have you participate in this rewarding project. You do not need to be a church member to help. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Judy Bucher, (419) 865-2140; Sally Bergfeld, (419) 878-4285; Karen Dress, (419) 878-7216 or Louise Stedman, (419) 875-6266. Thank you for your consideration.
