From Our Artistic Director Well, we haven't actually gotten any crisp, cool days in Portland lately, but the calendar does indicate that fall is here! We're excited to start our 2011-2012 season. We have so much going on that I'm not quite sure where to start, except to say that we're busy on all fronts: touring our show, High Art, starting our fall term of classes and performing at special events both in Portland and around the country.
We hope to see you soon, and with our schedule changing all the time, be sure to check our website for updates. And on the subject of keeping in touch, we recently changed our Facebook page to reflect our new name, so make sure you "like" us at Pendulum Aerial Arts. We will be phasing out our old page over the next month; make sure you make the switch! Suzanne Kenney Artistic Director |
Performance Update
HIGH ART is a stunning accomplishment -- a slow burn, unfolding from beginning grace to final majesty. I consider it a journey deep into the heart and back out again, and every part of the production --- from story, to music, costumes, makeup, themes and continuity, lighting --- contributed to the immense artistry of the show.
Dwight Vaught
Director, Doudna Fine Arts Center
In late August, we took High Art on the road to the Doudna Fine Arts Center at Eastern Illinois University for a series of 3 performances. It could not have gone better! The venue was beautiful and the staff and crew treated us like royalty. We enjoyed a sold-out house and some solid reviews. Be sure to check out the videos and photos on our Facebook page.
After such a great experience, we're itching to continue our success with presentations of High Art in Oregon. You can see it on October 22 in Klamath Falls and on January 21, 2012 in Salem. As a special treat, Nicole Pearson, who has worked with Pendulum since 2005, will be appearing as a guest artist at the Klamath Falls show. |

Fall registration is heating up with both kids and coaches ready to start the term on Saturday, September 10. There is still time to register, so if you'd like your children to give aerial a try, you can fill out the registration form online. We're offering aerial classes on Thursday evenings from 6-8:30 pm and Saturday mornings from 10 am-12:30 pm. The 19-week term runs from September 10-January 26.
We've been trumpeting this for a few months, but literally as I'm writing, Supatchaya (Goy) Suvan, an aerialist and coach from Thailand who has been training since the age of 7, is arriving in Portland. She'll have a few days to catch her breath and then straight to work with the kids! She'll be a guest artist with Pendulum for the entirety of the 2011-12 season, and we couldn't be happier about that.

We had a great opportunity to "show our stuff" at the Galaxy Dance Festival in downtown Portland on August 12. We performed for a large, enthusiastic crowd and had the chance to talk to old supporters and new friends about what we do. Fortunately, the unpredictable Portland weather was on our side!
And for something completely different, over Labor Day weekend, Sarah Hardy tried her hand at aerial bartending! She poured champagne from the air at a wedding held at Portland Center Stage. It was a new experience, and she had a blast!
