January 2010
Greetings!

Happy New Year to you! This is a time of year when our thoughts turn to positive changes that will help us to realize new levels of professional and personal success in the year to come. Note that you are also planting seeds for great success in the decade to come as well. Keep that short-term and long-term view in balance and you'll be significantly more strategic.

Thank you for your loyal readership, and a big welcome to my latest subscribers!
How Will You Invest In Yourself This Year?
As you think about ways to grow your business this year be sure to leave some funds in your budget for your own growth. What new skills will you learn that will help you to contribute at a higher level this year? What can you learn that will help you to be a better person?

In the past I've invested in marriage conferences, public speaking conferences, negotiation and marketing courses, Dale Carnegie courses, Toastmasters, countless Nightingale Conant programs, and more.

All of these were investments of time and money and looking back I wouldn't change my mind on any of them since I learned something to improve some aspect of my life each time. Your experience and traditional education will only take you so far. You must put continuing education on top of that to compete vigorously as a working adult.

Continuous learning is a well-known success secret of top achievers. Balance current production with investment in future growth and you, too, will be doing what top achievers do.

Now if you're using your Growth Coach Strategic Planner, then you are required to list out what you'll invest in during the next 90 days for personal or professional growth. If you don't use my planner, that's fine. Create your own list of things you could do to learn something new in the next quarter.

What courses could you take? What books could you read? What club could you join that's dedicated to growth? What conference could you attend?

Winnow down the list to a couple of items - don't overload yourself - then go for it.
Let me know what you're committing to and I'll gladly hold you accountable.

Do You Have Positive Momentum?
Moving Train
The standard definition of momentum is 'impetus of a physical object in motion'. The way I define it for a business owner is that your business is heading in one direction or another.

Anyone who's been in business for some time knows that a business either shrinks or grows. It doesn't stay the same. Knowing this we must strive to always keep it growing - unless we're winding down a business, which is a special case.

You create positive momentum by always doing something as a salesperson or marketer. Here's a short list of different activities you can do to create positive momentum:

1. Always have a seminar scheduled you can invite people to
2. Go to networking events regularly
3. Have a consistent advertising campaign
4. Send out a regular newsletter (ahem)
5. Do one hour of social networking every day
6. Join a referral group
7. Stay in touch with clients by inviting them to events, lunch or coffee
8 Introduce new products or services every six months and be sure everyone in your network knows about it
9. Start a Facebook fan page and talk about it with your network and put a badge on your website
10. Host a mixer through a local Chamber of Commerce
11. Follow up like a dog with a bone on every lead you get
12. Touch base with those who turned you down in the past to see if they'd like to buy now
13. Start a blog and write to it at least 1x a week
14. Personally ask every one of your clients for a referral. In 3 months do it again.
15. Try some new advertising - that isn't too expensive - you've not tried before
16. Incent your employees to bring in new customers by way of a contest
17. Create a sweepstakes
18. Donate items to chamber drawings to get your name mentioned to a crowd
19. Have a meeting every week with someone you can partner with
20. Have a meeting every week with someone who can refer business to you

These are just a few things you can do. What else can you do to create forward momentum so you start moving like that train above with a head of steam? Let me know and I'll add it to the blog post I do of this article.

My bottom line point here is that action begets action. Move and something else moves in reaction. No matter how busy or not busy you are keep creating sales and marketing action and you'll keep your business on the up and up.
Upcoming Training Events on Social Networking
I'm seeing a greater and greater interest in social networking for your business. And it's no wonder now that Facebook is at 350 million users and Twitter is at 60+ million and MySpace is in between the two somewhere.

Social networking is not a fad. It's an evolution of how we communicate. To get a sense of the impact it's having on our culture you may want to watch this short video on YouTube - the 2nd largest search engine in use today.

The Wall Street Journal reported a few months back that email has now been eclipsed as the #1 way people communicate with each other. I haven't analyzed my pattern to see if I communicate more through social networks or email, but I can tell you that I regularly send people messages through Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. They are just different address books in my mind.

Because this is the next stage in electronic communication and hundreds of millions of people are using it daily, you should get some sense of familiarity and comfort with social media. It will serve you well.

I've been investing a lot of time and energy in to employing social networking as well as reading books on it and now feel comfortable with presenting built from scratch training events. You have two upcoming opportunities to learn:

1. A free 75-minute seminar at the Foster City Chamber on Tuesday, February 23rd at 5:15 pm. You can get more information here and RSVP by calling them at 650-573-7600. You do not need to be a member of the Chamber to RSVP.

2. A 3 & 1/2 hour workshop in March at the Crowne Plaza. The date is TBD, If you are interested please let me know whether you would prefer a weekday morning, afternoon or evening or a Saturday morning or afternoon. The more responses I get the better idea I'll have on when to book the event to serve the greatest number of people.

At this workshop you will get an in-depth education on what social media platforms are now available to use, for business, in isolation or in combination. Then, we'll discuss strategy and how you can create a 'theme' for your social networking that works for you. It's your theme that will excite you about social networking.

Lastly, you will roll up your sleeves and do some social networking by setting up accounts with a laptop you bring or share with someone else. I'll have a wireless network in the room. This way you won't leave without having gotten started, which is a failing of many short-form training events.

Pricing for this workshop will be $100 for clients, $149 for friends of The Growth Coach (if you're reading this and you're not a client, you're a friend), and $179 for the general public. These are all pre-registration prices. I'll have registration open in early February. Contact me with any questions.
Time Saving Tip of the Month
I have a tip for you on a free utility that I'm finding to be a time saver when it comes to internet reading. It's called Instapaper. Here's how it works: You go to a website that has an article you'd like to read. You click on the button in your browser area that says, Read Later. That activates Instapaper, which essentially indexes the page and saves it to your account for later reading.

You access your account by logging in at their website. It's quite handy and easy to use. If you like to surf the web and often find interesting articles or blog posts you'd like to read someday, then this utility is for you. Another one of those utilities that you can't believe is free. Find it here.
Thanks for reading this month's issue. Please forward it to someone else who could benefit by receiving it.

I want to express my deep appreciation to everyone who supports this business in one way or another. I could not be here without you. Thank you very much.

Remember that true fulfillment comes when you build and balance.

Have a fantastic New Year!

Sincerely,

Michael Neuendorff
