September 2009
Greetings!

Welcome to the September edition of Build and Balance. You may have noticed there's a new header on the newsletter. I think it looks pretty nifty and am glad I hired Erin Ferree of elf design to create it for me. I am committed to having a professional look with all of my online marketing and am taking the necessary steps to do so. I address this subject more in the Build article below.

The balance article is about getting off the computer sometimes and relaxing in other ways. There's a whole world outside of our computers. It's not virtual, it's real. Let's get out there and enjoy it from time to time. Please do forward this newsletter to others in business. I'd really appreciate that action on your part. Thanks, as always, for your faithful support.
A Unified Online Presence

One song, many instruments.

In the introduction I mentioned that I've
invested in having a unified look among my multiple online  presences: twitter page, blog, website, and newsletter. I did this because it makes sense. In the real world you work hard to portray yourself and your business consistently. (If you don't, then you should.)

So, why shouldn't it be this way online, too? It's tempting to just go with whatever design template is available at the time when you sign up for an online presence. Twitter, Constant Contact (this newsletter's provider), TypePad (blogging service), and Microsoft Office Live (my web host) all have numerous free  templates to choose from. And this is what I did at first - choose whatever seemed kinda green and tan (classic Growth Coach colors) and went forward.

But after doing all this I realized that my various instruments weren't creating one beautiful melody. That was not powerful, but rather counterproductive. So, I hired Erin as I mentioned in the intro above.

Now I challenge you to look at my blog, this newsletter (ok, you're looking at it. I get that), my website and twitter page and say that it doesn't look professional. I'm not trying to brag, I'm trying to make an important point. You should want this for your business. Impressions count. How you come across online is too important in this age and this geography to take lightly.

Contact me if you have any questions about this. I'd be happy to talk with you about the online instruments you're using and how to make them part of one orchestra.
Is it time for a computer break?
Finger on a keyboard

Average weekly computer usage is on the rise. Internet addiction is a real phenomena. I've experienced for myself how captivating the computer can be. It's just so powerful. That goes for getting work done as well as having fun. I don't participate in fantasy football leagues or online gaming or have an avatar in Second Life, but I know all of these net-based activities are very popular.

I know when I've been on the computer too long because my wrists get sore. With my BlackBerry my right thumb gets sore. I have a physical trigger that tells me to take a break. What's your sign to take a break? Is it a spouse or partner telling you to get off the computer already and come out for a walk or sit down for a meal? Do you eat in front of the computer so you can keep working or playing?

I'm about balance and I'm fairly sure that I'm sometimes out of balance when it comes to getting off the computer and living in the real world. That's what made we want to bring this up. I'll be a little more aware of this in the next few months as I observe where I'm spending most of my time. I'll probably blog about it, too, which will have me on the computer some more! Let me know if this is an issue for you and what you do about it.
Time Saving Tip of the Month - SugarSync

I recently discovered a new tool for having almost instant access to whatever important files you have on any of your computers. It's called SugarSync. With this utility I have all important docs on my home pc (my workhorse) available to me from my BlackBerry or laptop. This way, if I'm out and about and I need to email a doc to a client that's on my desktop at home, I can grab it with SugarSync and email it to them. This is much faster than remotely accessing the pc at home, which is what I used to do from my latptop when I had an internet connection. What's actually emailed is a link to a download of the document. This makes real sense when files are big. That's the Build feature.

The Balance feature of SugarSync is that it allows me to share family photos with my parents in Arizona very easily. I upload new photos to the folder, then my dad can go in there and grab them. He does need to have a SugarSync account to do this, which is free for starters. We've gone through multiple ways to share photos and we think this might just be the easiest yet.

Both uses save me TIME. If you'd like to learn more about this useful new utility, click here

Thanks for reading this month's issue. I want to express my deep appreciation to those of you who are doing business with me or referring business to me. I could not be here without you. Thank you.

Remember that true fulfillment comes when you build and balance.

Sincerely,
