Build and Balance
Words to live and grow by.
May 2009
Greetings!

Welcome to the May edition of Build and Balance. We're almost at the halfway point of the year. It's a good time to take stock of where you are and consider this point in relation to what you intend to achieve this year. If you're not as far along as you thought you would be by now, it's either because you didn't have a firm plan (which will be discussed below in the Build article) or you were too ambitious, which we'll discuss in the Balance article for the month. Thanks for your loyal readership and please do send comments or questions about the items this month.

What are your goals for the next 90 days?
Writing in a journal

That blank space next to the picture above is there for you to write them down. If you've never written down your goals before - or dare I say it, set goals before - then you're on the verge of a major breakthrough. Why? It's been proven over and over by success researchers that those who write their goals down concretely and review them regularly are much more likely to out pace their peers.

Think about it, who gets anywhere without a plan, a map, direction? Goals written down provide a target for you to shoot for. When they're supporting steps towards a longer-term strategy, then they're turbo-charged.

People often ask me why I became a Growth Coach out of all the careers I could have chosen. Between you and me a key reason is because I knew this business would impel me to do everything that I want you as my client to do. It would be hypocritical to do otherwise.

Therefore, I use a Strategic Planner provided by The Growth Coach to map out each 90 days of action. I know where I'm going from week to week. It's very exciting to see these goals on paper come to fruition as months 1, 2 and 3 come and go. As an extra boost I have a coach who encourages, challenges and holds me accountable to get it done.

Perhaps you've been successful without goal setting on paper. If so, a hearty congratulations to you. Will you allow me to challenge you to see how much farther you can go with a more rigorous approach to achievement?

I will be launching a Strategic Mindset workshop series in Burlingame on Wednesday, June 24th. We'll spend a day together with a small group of  business owners reflecting on the past, examining the present and contemplating the future. Lastly, we'll make goals for the next 90 days. This signature Growth Coach process is proven, powerful and maybe best of all, guaranteed. I take all the risk that this process will propel you to new levels of success in your business or you don't pay. If you're at all intrigued by the potential, then let me know you want some more detail.

Even if you're not drawn to the workshop series at this time, ask me for a free copy of the Strategic Planner to use privately for the next 90 days to see how powerful just that one step alone can be for you.

Are your ambitions getting in the way of balance in your life?
Smiling woman on cell phone.Memorial Day has come and gone. Many see this holiday as the beginning of summer. Suddenly talk of vacations becomes a popular topic of conversation. But perhaps not with you. Are you so busy that you don't think you can afford (timewise) the luxury of a beachfront chair under an umbrella?

If so, then maybe it's because you're too ambitious. Brian Tracy said "The average person underestimates what they can achieve in five years but overestimates what they can do in one." I believe that many small business owners are overly ambitious as to what they can do in a short amount of time. I'm speaking from experience here!

I was talking to a business owner just the other day who told me that she didn't want to join my referral club because she first wanted to focus on those business-building efforts she'd already committed to. You rarely hear this from people in conversation. I have started saying this from time to time when faced with an opportunity because 1. I don't want to overload myself and deliver less service to my clients, and 2. Since I'm already busy in my professional life every new commitment I accept or new short-term goal that I set means my personal life occupies less and less time on my calendar.

I refuse to give up my personal life. Life is too short and my family, friends and hobbies are too important. When it comes time to set goals for your business, be realistic and plan for downtime. You'll enjoy the ride more when you're not always redlining the engine, but instead going at a steady pace and pulling off at the rest areas to stretch and breathe.

Bottom line on this: If your personal life is getting in the way of your ambitions, then maybe you need to look at it the other way and ratchet down your annual goals and ratchet up your five-year goals. You're likely to actually get further than you thought possible in the long run and have more days on the beach, too!
Time saving tip: Outsource
Small business owners are unique. They feel they need to do everything even if it means working until midnight every day. Problem is that as business picks up the midnight oil isn't enough to get it all done. Moreover the mounting task list creates stress and fatigue.

There's a much better way to run your business that may take a big leap of faith on your part: Outsource. You can save valuable time by outsourcing those tasks that don't require your talent to accomplish and could be handled for much less per hour than you're worth. If you don't have an hourly value for your time, then start with that calculation, then you'll know which tasks you shouldn't be doing so you can do more of the high value tasks that cater to your talent and move your business forward. If you're attracted to the concept but aren't sure how to start, give me a call and we'll talk it over.
Thanks for reading this month's issue. I want to express my deep appreciation to those of you who are doing business with me or referring business to me. I could not be here without you. Thank you.

Remember that true fulfillment comes when you build and balance.

Sincerely,
