Horses running in snow

   Cows, Cows, Cows
It's all about the cows this
  time of year.  Feeding them
all winter has been the main
  ranch chore, but now they
  are starting to calve.  We
  are watching the heifers
24/7 as having a baby is
  something new to them and
they aren't so sure they want
  to accept the responsibility
  --- something like teenagers.
  Besides that it is cold
outside -- 16 below this week.
Where is global warming  when you need it!
The old cows have another week or two before they are "supposed" to start calving ----
should be at least 1400 calves running around by the first of May enjoying the spring
  weather.

They hear the tractor and come running.                   The warmest place is by mom laying

BCC sign in snowThe deadly combination of sheep and wolves. . .

Nothing can break a kids heart faster than losing a favorite pet.
Our neighbors just lost 11 sheep to wolves again this year, and of course, one was the kids' pet lamb.
They had the sheep fenced in, guard dogs around, and were protecting them as well as they could, but the wolves made a good kill before the dogs woke everyone up.  They weren't hungry --- didn't eat a thing --- just out for the sport.

Dogsledding  - Montana's new way to travel

What a great time  we had one cold weekend this February.     The dogs were so amazing and so excited to run.  Not as big  as I thought they would be as they are now breeding the  huskies with bordie collie (for intelligence) and hound (for  endurance).  Some of the dogs had run the Ididerod (one 8  times) and others were retired sled dogs from Alaska.  I  actually got to drive the lead team and what a thrill.  Homemade cookies and hot chocolate half way through our scenic 8 mile ride made it a perfect morning.

For the Love of a Horse
                              BCC sign in snow

The realationship between a girl and her horse is beautiful. It is a relationship of personal growth, leadership, courage and empowerment.  Many stories have been told about personal triumphs under the forgiving, non-judgmental teachings of a horse.
Humans and horses are both social species and accept each other on that basis. Horses are ageless and teach us responsibility, yet  help us to find our wings.

They teach us to trust our instincts and take the reins of life.

Guest Quote for the Day

  S"Since I was a young
    girl I have dreamed
    of coming to Mon-
    tana.  I imagined in
    my mind a place of
    horses and moun-
    tains and beauty, a
    place where peace
    could be found.
    In coming to Bonan-
    za Creek, I have
    found all of the
    above and more.
    What I never
    imagined in those
    visions was the
    true generosity
    of its people.

Tip for the Day

  The most important
  factor in having a
  horse who wants to
  please you is
  genuine caring on
  your part. Horses
  are very forgiving of
  the people who truly
  love them, even when
  those people make
  mistakes that are
  frightening or even
  painful.
