ADULT EDUCATION:Journeys in Jewish Thought and Experience

-Torah Study:  Start to Finish-We're going to begin an open, ongoing, reading of the Torah/Bible from Chapter 1 of Genesis through the end in Chronicles.  Participants can come on a drop-in basis or on an ongoing basis.  We'll read and study the texts in English.  Both Rabbi Tow and participants in the class will present on a rotating basis.  This course will begin this year and continue until we finish! It could take several years!

THE FIRST CLASS WILL MEET AT 8PM,  TUESDAY, OCTOBER 19.

-Adult Bar-Bat Mitzvah Class:
Beginning in the middle of October, the Adult Bnai Mitzvah class will start.  We'll spend time studying the prayers of the Shabbat service, and developing a richer knowledge of Jewish thought and practice.  Each student will create his or her own tallit for the April 9 Adult Bnai Mitzvah service.  All students will participate in the service itself and chant small portions of the Haftarah for that day.  Classes will meet weekly.  Students will meet with volunteers outside of class to help prepare the prayers they will lead.

THE FIRST SESSION OF THE ADULT BAR/BAT MITZVAH PROGRAM WILL MEET AT 11:30AM, SUNDAY OCT.17

Shabbat Shalom from Rabbi Tow

We read parshat Noach in the Torah this week.  Here is a poem I wrote about the Noah story that you can try at the Shabbat table.  Add animals sounds and motions to make it even more fun!  Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Tow

Mr. Noah built a boat

On the water it would have to float

For 40 days and 40 nights

Rain and clouds would put out the lights

Onto the boat there came a crew

of all the world's animals two by two

The geese said, Honk!

The cows said, Moo!

The monkeys said, Oowe oowe oowee ooo!

The sheep said, baa!

The goats said, aaah!

The lions said, Roar!

The owls said, hoo hoo!

The birds said, tweet tweet!

The donkeys said, hee haw!

The cats said, meow!

And the people on the boat looked at all the water and said, Wow!

One day Noah sent out a dove,

Who brought back an olive branch

A sign of peace and love

The sun came out

Everything dried up!

And the animals left the boat

From the biggest elephant to the smallest pup.

The grass started to grow

The flowers began to bloom

For everyone in the world, there was plenty of room.

But the most wonderful and marvelous sight

that they all saw in the skies,

(They saw it each with a thank-you-to-God in their eyes)

They saw the sign of God's promise to be with them always

Through spring, summer, fall and winter days,

This sign of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet

Is something we all know

By its special name:

We call it a rainbow.

Our first book group meeting for the year will take place on
Tuesday, October 12
8:00 p.m.
in the library
We will discuss
Have a Little Faith: a True Story
by Mitch Albom
(author of Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven)

Albom book
Have a Little Faith
begins with an unusual request: an eighty-two-year-old rabbi from Albom's old hometown asks him to deliver his eulogy.  Feeling unworthy, Albom insists on understanding the man better, which throws him back into a world of faith he'd left years ago. Meanwhile, closer to his current home, Albom becomes involved with a Detroit pastor--a reformed drug dealer and convict--who preaches to the poor and homeless in a decaying church with a hole in its roof.
(Amazon reviews)

"The book is available for our group at the Glen Rock Public Library.  Just pick up the book at the Reference Desk and use your library card to check it out."

Please join us!  We will also discuss what we would like to read in the upcoming year.

Contact mstrassberg67@hotmail.com for more information and to RSVP.
