Fathers & Fathering in Contemporary Contexts

NCFMR 2012 Annual Research Conference

The diversity characterizing today's fathers coupled with the heterogeneity in contemporary fathering behaviors make the NCFMR Fathers and Fathering in Contemporary Contexts research conference particularly timely. The goal of this conference is to move forward our understanding of fathers and fathering in contemporary contexts and examine their linkages to well-being, building on the foundation established by the Nurturing Fatherhood conference held in '98.

Our panel of distinguished researchers will address the following substantive topics:
    • Resident Fathers
    • Nonresident Fathers
    • Co-Parenting
    • Father Involvement and Well-Being
    • Fathers in Diverse Contexts

Watch for registration details in March, and visit our website often for updates.

NCFMR Research Team Finds Crossover in Median Age at First Marriage and First Birth

Historically, women's median age at first birth exceeded their median age at first marriage, suggesting most women got married and then had a first birth. Since 1991, this pattern has reversed, with the median age of first marriage exceeding the median age at motherhood. Now, a substantial proportion of women experience a first birth before they enter marriage. Indeed, the share of births to unmarried women increased from 18% to 40% over the past 30 years. Combining data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey and the Center for Disease Control's National Vital Statistics, the NCFMR team investigates the trends in women's median age at first marriage and median age at first birth since 1980.

Integrated Fertility Survey Series LogoIntroductory Integrated Fertility Survey Series (IFSS) Workshop Will Be Held During 2012 PAA Annual Conference

The IFSS is a harmonized data set containing data from ten nationally representative U.S. surveys of family and fertility spanning nearly fifty years. This introductory workshop, to be held during the 2012 PAA annual conference, includes an overview of the data, provides examples of research questions that can be analyzed with the data, and demonstrates how to navigate the IFSS website.

Please see http://www.psc.isr.umich.edu/pubs/misc/IFSS_brochure.pdf for more details about the IFSS. For planning purposes, please email sarah.hayford@asu.edu if you would like to attend.

The National Center for Family & Marriage Research, established in 2007 by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, aims to improve our understanding of how family structure and marriage affect the health and well-being of families, adults, children, and communities and to inform policy development and programmatic responses.
