Fitness, Fun and Flashback...
Wow! What a fantastic event! Thanks to all our sponsors, exhibitors and most of all our loyal attendees who have supported us for the last twenty years! DCAC 2011 was one of the best conferences we have had in the past twenty years and it was filled with all sorts of fun adventures in fitness. The presenters were great and provided us with some new and innovative continuing education as well as some creative moves to add to our group exercise classes. We also welcomed several new and up and coming presenters to our line up that will surely be sought after as the BEST in the years to come. The highlight of the conference had to be the Flashback to 1991 Party! All who attended enjoyed the music, the next BIG Presenter contest and most of all the food and the fashion statements made by some revisiting the 1990's!
We are looking forward to 2012 at our new location the Sheraton Premiere in Tysons Corner, VA and hope to see you there. Remember, the 3 day main conference registration opens February 1, 2012 at $199.00, this rate is good for ONE DAY ONLY so don't miss out! Register early as we are expecting this event to sell out! Laughter Yoga - It's Not Funny
Cathy O'Donnell
| "When you laugh, you change and when you change the world changes around you."
~ Dr. Madan Kataria
Laughter Yoga is a gentle, whole body exercise where we laugh for no reason, without having to rely on humor, jokes or comedy. Laughing is a physical activity like coughing or scratching your nose. You don't need to be happy in order to laugh, laughing will make you happy.
While Hatha Yoga is considered a Mind-Body form of exercise, where each physical movement is preceded by a thought, accompanied by an intention, Laughter Yoga, or Hasya Yoga, is a Body-Mind method of movement. It is easier to control the body than the mind. For example, lift your right arm, lower it. Lift your left arm, lower it. Now close your eyes and don't think about monkeys, think about anything else, just not monkeys. Yes, I know that if you are reading this your eyes are open, but you get the point.
The body cannot tell the difference between real and faked laughter, so when we laugh for no reason, the body sends signals to the brain to release happy hormones and happy chemicals making you feel happy. When you laugh in a group and are able to see and hear others laughing, the laughter becomes contagious and quickly turns into real, authentic laughter. We've all experienced how a good laugh makes us feel better.
The method of Laughter Yoga was created in 1995 in Mumbai, India by Dr. Madan Kataria and his lovely wife Madhuri. Dr. Kataria was writing an article on the subject of "Laughter is the Best Medicine" for a medical journal when he had the thought, "If laughter is so good for us, why don't we practice it?" With that he walked to his local park where he persuaded 5 people to laugh with him. That was the first Laughter Club. Today there are over 10,000 Laughter Clubs in over 60 countries around the world.
Yoga means "to unite". Laughter Yoga unites body, mind and breath through the physical act of laughing. Laughter sessions consist of laughing exercises, clapping exercises and breathing exercises all performed with a playful spirit. Participants are encouraged to engage in the activities, make eye contact and enthusiastically fake the laughter if necessary.
At its most basic laughter is a deep breathing exercise, with emphasis on a forced exhalation. As with any effective breathing exercise laughter will help to increase lung function, strengthen and tone the muscles of respiration including the abdominals and reduce stress. So you can see Laughter Yoga can positively impact any physical condition that would from a program that includes breathing and stress relief. And it's fun!
