SGT. KEN BOOT CAMP

sgt. ken cropped

Sgt. Ken Weichert (a.k.a. "Sgt. Ken"), creator of the nation's longest-running Boot Camp fitness program, START Fitness, will prepare fitness instructors for the front lines in the fight against obesity during his pre-conference Boot Camp Instructor Course on Thursday, August 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As an Army Master Fitness and Master Resilience Trainer and Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, Sgt. Ken is able to arm Boot Camp Instructors with battle-tested military training techniques to take home to their clients.

The certificate course, developed by Sgt. Ken and certified personal trainer Stephanie Weichert, will immerse participants in indoor and outdoor functional fitness programs, military-style obstacle courses, partner-assisted exercises, proper form and safety, nutrition and so much more!

"SGT Ken's boot camp classes were some of the most difficult and empowering workouts I have ever had," said an attendee of a similar June conference.

"He was so student-focused and created not only great workouts, but also brought out leadership skills of the members in the class."

Registration for this pre-conference session is $269; spaces are limited and going fast so sign up today! The Boot Camp Instructor Certification course will provide 0.8 continuing education credits (CEC) toward affiliations like ACE and NASM upon successful completion of the course.

Provided with registration cost is an arsenal of instructor tools, including: Instructor Manual including lesson plans and assessments, DVD loaded with music and multimedia workouts, and loads of other resources.

The session is based on Sgt. Ken's Operation Fit to Fight program, used by the US Armed Forces to increase the combat readiness of our Soldiers and prevent stress or injury in the field through exceptional fitness instructor training.

One previous participant mentioned, "I came looking for a good instructor program and wound up getting a crushing shot of Boot Camp Adrenaline! HOOAH!"

GO BAREFOOT FOR BETTER HEALTH

Daniel Howell, Ph.D.

In the previous issue of this newsletter we read that posture-related musculoskeletal disorders are increasing at an alarming rate. Indeed, the month of July has been selected by the National Posture Institute (NPI) as International Posture Awareness Month to bring attention to this growing health concern. But why might posture-related aches and pains be on the rise?

One culprit may be our shoes.

barefoot posture image

More than ever we are standing, walking and running in gait-altering, motion-restrictive, cast-like shoes. A mounting body of scientific evidence suggests our shoes are harming us.

The figure illustrates how your body responds to the elevated heels in shoes. If our bodies were rigid, even a low heel (1 inch) would tip us forward enough to fall over. Fortunately, we are not rigid; we have flexible joints. Unfortunately, our joints permit us to make unnatural postural adjustments to accommodate elevated heels in footwear. While these adjustments allow us to stand upright and walk with elevated heels, they also put unnatural and excessive stress on our bones and joints all the way up the body. The result: posture-related aches and pains.

While it's fairly obvious that high heels affect your posture and gait, it's not so obvious that even "sensible" shoes like walking and running trainers may be just as harmful. Not only do typical walking/running shoes have a ž - 1-inch heel, they also restrict movement in the foot and ankle and alter the natural stepping motion. Restrictive features like toe springs, arch supports, instep supports and hard soles limit the natural motions that occur when walking. Highly-cushioned insoles and thick outer soles eliminate proprioception by the 100,000+ nerve endings in each foot. All together, these features change the way we stand and walk and force unnatural motions on our knees, hips and spine.

So what can you do to improve your posture and strengthen your joints? Take off your shoes and walk!
