Create Countless Knock Out Rides with the Schwinn® Cycling "Coach Approach"

By Julz Arney, Schwinn® Cycling Lead Master Instructor

Class after class, week after week, you've got to get on that bike at the front of the room and deliver a fresh, motivating cardio workout where the calories burn and the time flies by. That's no small task, but approach your rides like an athletic coach does training workouts and you'll save time and create loyal followers willing to line up to be sure they get to ride with YOU. Here are some tips to get started:

1. Choose the intensity plan for your ride before you choose your music. Like any cardio workout, consider who your participants are and their fitness goals. Sketch out approximately how much time will be allotted to easy, moderate, hard and anaerobic work during the ride, incorporating intervals and steady state work as appropriate. Create a rough timeline for how this will unfold, (i.e., A 10 minute warm up moving from easy to moderate work; an eight minute moderate climb ending with a two minute sprint to anaerobic; a two minute easy recovery...) Match this with great music, fine-tuning the timing of your intensity plan to maximize each song.
2. Break the ride into chunks or "stages". Imagine mapping an outdoor run or bike ride. You might divide it into miles, or segments based on terrain. Every time you complete a stage, there is a feeling of accomplishment and motivation. You can capitalize on this for your students with your coaching. And, compartmentalizing the work into stages makes it easy to remember.
Example: Today's ride has 5 stages. Stages 2 and 3 are the toughest - both are big climbs with anaerobic pushes to the top!
3. Create a filing system for stages. Whether you write them on note cards, or type them into your smart phone, save the stages you create. In a short amount of time you will have dozens, and when it comes to planning a new ride you can quickly plug n' play.

Whole Self Health and Natural Nutrition with Teri Gentes
Sweet Potato Soup with Roasted Garlic, Lemon Grass

sweet pot. soup
INGREDIENTS:
1.  1 tbsp Maison Orphee's virgin coconut or extra virgin olive oil
2.  1 Vidalia onion, chopped
3.  heaping tbsp lemon grass, minced-Use the soft centre of stalks or substitute
     w/ lemon zest

4.  2 bulbs garlic, roasted or poached (Use a tsp or two of fresh garlic if preferred)
5.  4 large sweet potatoes, quartered (approx 2 lbs)
6.  6 cups organic vegetable or chicken stock - Pacific low sodium is great
7.  1/3 cup coconut milk-I use the Native Forest, organic low fat
8.  Sea Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
9.  Organic Lemon zest and fresh coriander to garnish

DIRECTIONS:
1.  In a large saucepan, over medium heat, sauté the onions in oil until soft.
2.  Press garlic out of the skins, mash and add to onions along with the lemon grass,
potatoes and stock. Love spicy foods: Stir in a generous tbsp of Thai Kitchen red
     curry paste

3.  Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover and simmer until potatoes are tender,
     approximately 30 minutes.

4.  Add coconut milk, return to boil then remove from heat, cool slightly and puree in
batches with a submersible hand blender or in a food processor until smooth.

5.  Serve with a generous garnish of lemon zest and coriander.
