Craigies Farm Shop and Cafe Newsletter

NewsletterAug 2010
Greetings!

My Mum informed me that Autumn has now arrived, the rowan berries are out.....she is probably right because a couple of months have passed since our summer!  Oh well at least we can look forward to spring weather at Christmas :-)
August the month of Tasting

We have organised some great tasting sessions for the month of August.  It is a great chance to meet the producer and taste their product.

Saturday 14th August - Knopp's Beer, a local micro brewer from Edinburgh.

Saturday 21st August - Simple Simons Pies - Gourmet fast food.

Saturday 28th August - Tyrrell's Chips - Possibly the best crisps on the market?

We are also going to be getting very involved with Scotland's Food and Drink fortnight in September - watch out for more info on this.
Butchery News

The butchery is now being accepted as a great addition to Craigie's, great quality meat at a good price.

Congratulations to young Sean who has made it qualifying round for 'Young Butcher of the Year Award'.  Sean is heading down to Manchester where he will be showing his skills off.  The competition is getting filmed for BBC 3.  Good luck Sean!

From next week Steve is going to be stocking Balmoral Estate Venison, that has got to worth trying out!

Also check out the great butchery offer below.

Shop News

Tom (the new guy!) has been putting his stamp on the shop already.  We are half way through moving the shop displays around so that the products are displayed better and so that we can get more products in.
Over the summer we have also added quite few new products.

Please email me on john@craigies.co.uk and let us know what you think we should be stocking.
Fruit Update

Ready picked strawberries and raspberries are available fresh every day and should go on well into October.
At the moment PYO raspberries are really good and easy to pick, so now is the time to get that freezer filled or get the jam made.

Farm News

Things are going well on the farm (so well my golf handicap has been cut by 3 this season :-) ).

The Social Enterprise veg project is really taking shape now with a lot of produce hitting our shops shelves.  Tom, Kirsty and their team are making a fab job and have great plans for next season.

The weather gave us some problems at the beginning of July blowing the tunnel covers off a block of tunnels.  Fortunately the block was not at the stage of harvest so we managed to get them recovered and back on track.

At the end of the month the combine should arrive to cut our Spring Barley and Wheat.  Although we are selling our potatoes in the shop at the moment, the potato crop will not be harvested until late September.
We are hoping that we will have an electricity supply to our shop next week.  It has taken over a year and lord only knows how many men (and managers) to get an up graded supply to the shop and cafe.  It will be worth the wait, at least I will not need to fill the generator up with diesel every second day.....

Regards
John
