 STUDENT SUCCESS
| |
Principal Tonny Gisbertz reported that the Safe School Ambassador program is in its first year at Highland Elementary School. Students that are selected as ambassadors are proven leaders and good role models. The program teaches the student ambassadors how to work through challenges and mediate situations with their peers. Advisors/Teachers Melissa Varela and Candice Harvick attended the board meeting along with the students pictured below who performed skits showing strategies they have learned.

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Kevin Silberberg, Ed.D. | Opportunities for teachers to add more "tools in their toolbox" abound during the month of October. I would like to encourage our entire teaching staff to apply for a Standard School Foundation Grant. These funds are set aside to fund innovative projects that will equip the classroom teacher to reach students in new and exciting ways. The limit is $1,200.00 per teacher and the deadline is October 31.
Another opportunity in the works is a "Double Your Impact" campaign with Donorschoose and Chevron for STEM projects. Many teachers are aware of the concept behind Donorschoose where classroom projects are highlighted on the website and individuals can donate to that project. Please note, to qualify for this program, the project must involve science, technology, engineering, or math in some way. Standard is working with Chevron to double whatever funds are designated for any project within our District. For example, if $250 comes in as a donation, Chevron will match that amount raising the amount to $500. More on this program will be coming to schools in the near future.
With declining state funds and a poor economy, these opportunities are invaluable. Our thanks to the SSD Foundation and Chevron for meeting teachers needs this year.

STRATEGIC PLAN Continue to refine the work of "teacher leadership teams" on each campus.
| Teachers from all school sites collaborated with Gary Giannoni from Pivot Learning Partners on October 20, 201, to conclude a seven week workshop series for Teacher Leadership Training for Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) . This series of workshops have empowered Teacher PLC Leaders to train other teachers at schools sites by offering a deeper look at the step of the Cycle of Inquiry and resources for the continuing development of strong PLCs in the Standard School District.
