This Mother's Day, we're reminded that sometimes the greatest gifts are all around us; we just have to look for them.

In an age where virtually limitless forms of communication abound, many of us still appreciate
the time-honored ways of staying in touch. Handwritten letter writing is a skill that I learned from my mom
and her sisters. Growing up in a family of 10 children scattered near and far, my mom and her WWII-era siblings perfected the art of communicating
when there were no cell phones, computers, or Facebook.
I still have one aunt who writes me a multi-page letter every year for my birthday. Reading that letter is like sitting
down with her at the kitchen table over a cup of coffee. I can actually hear her voice as I read the folksy narrative of
her everyday life, written in the beautiful and graceful handwriting style that is uniquely hers.
For years after we moved to North Carolina, my mom wrote long, newsy letters to us every month or so in her impeccable
longhand, even though we talked regularly on the phone. My mom has since passed away, but I kept every one of her letters,
knowing that someday I'd want to read them again. So, this year on Mother's Day I'll sit down at my kitchen table
with a cup of coffee and read my mom's letters. I know I'll hear her voice in every word as if she's sitting right there with
me. Thanks mom for this beautiful gift.
