Malama Kaua`i Community Garden Update: Official Opening January 2, 2010 Do you have your garden plot yet? Sign up today!
We would like thank everyone that attended the garden blessing on November 12th. It truly was a great way to introduce the garden to the community.
Now, it's time to get people activated on growing and sharing in the abundance. There are two options when applying for a plot; either as [1] individuals and families or [2] as businesses and organizations.
We encourage businesses and organizations to consider getting a space for their staff or membership as it's a great opportunity for people to build relationships and work together in a different setting. Those that sign up for a business or organization plot will also be recognized as a "Garden Sponsor" in the garden materials and in communications, both printed and broadcast. So you not only get to do the right thing, but we'll share your inspirational deed with others.
We also encourage those who want to help others to sign on as a "Plot Sponsor". This means you would provide a scholarship to support an family or group for a year.
Plots sizes are 15x20 feet and each one comes with roadway and water access. We also plan to host workshops that will help you to keep a better garden. Sounds like fun doesn't it?
To get involved, register yourself, family, business or organization today by contacting Mel Drisko at acukauai@gmail.com Or call us at 828-0685.
We look forward to growing food with you!

Preparing for Tomorrow Through Responsible Actions TodayNow is the time to join the Malama Kaua'i Green Business Program (GBP). The program offers locally owned, independent businesses the opportunity to join an exciting, fun program that provides support to community businesses looking to minimize their environmental footprint. The GBP's goal is to help your business reduce waste and pollution while optimizing profits and customer relations. We want to see Kaua'i's local economy flourish through sustainable business practices that support the 'aina and encourage increased community responsibility. It really is that simple. The GBP has teamed up with KIUC, the County Recycling Office, and the Office of Economic Development to provide your business with the adequate tools needed for a smooth transition into superior efficiency. We offer a tiered level of green certification, providing assistance every step of the way. Our basic Membership Tier requires that every business go plastic/styrofoam-free, and recycle. In addition, if the business is a restaurant, it must purchase at least 25% local produce, when available, and if it is a office/retail business, it must use 30-100% recycled printing paper. After completing these simple, profound steps, and paying the low membership rate of $100, good for one year, you will become an official GBP member, receive placement on our 2010 island-wide Green Map, and have access to a wide range of member benefits (too numerous to mention here). It is time to let the community know of your commitment to environmental stewardship. The GBP is a great way to receive increased community visibility, publicity, advertising, and customer loyalty. Begin your journey today, laying the foundation for a better tomorrow.

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS IN HAWAI`I:

Seed Symposium in April
Open-Pollinated
seed is being lost at a rapid rate-95% of varieties that were grown in
1900 are no longer available today. These varieties were the backbone
of the home garden and market farm for centuries. The Kohala Center
has received a grant through the USDA/ OREI (Organic Research and
Education Initiative) to hold a public Seed Symposium on April 17-18,
2010 at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort in Kona. This assessment is
being sent to potential participants in hopes of gathering basic
information about interest and knowledge of seed growing and saving
that will assist us in planning a meaningful program for the
Symposium. If you are part of an agricultural organization or group in Hawai'i please forward this to your members.
It
is our greatest hope that statewide/islandwide seed working groups will
emerge from the symposium as well as further workshops to gather
knowledge, conduct variety trials, and hold field days to share seed
and information on-farm, leading to statewide production of high
quality seed for both the home and the market.
By the end of December The Kohala Center (www.kohalacenter.org)
will have a webpage up with details about the Symposium, "Hua Ka Hua -
Restore Our Seed", as well as a link to registration. Please take this
Seed Assessment on Survey Monkey as soon as possible. It takes about
10 minutes or less to complete: http://www.kohalacenter.org/seedsurvey.html
If you have any comments or questions, please contact me directly.
Mahalo for your participation and we hope to see you in Kona in April 2010,
Nancy
