plastic bag turtlePLASTIC BAGS  ACTION ALERT!

WHAT WE SEE:
Plastic bags floating in the ocean, littering the side of the road, spilling out of our trash cans, and floating in the wind to who knows where...

WHAT WE DON'T SEE:
  • 1 billion seabirds and marine mammals dieing every year as a result of plastic bags
  • Toxic plastic chemicals building up in our bodies
  • 8% of the world's oil production being used to make plastic
  • 1000 years from now, plastic bags from today still sitting in our landfill (hmmm... ever wonder what that mountain of trash will look like in 1000 years?)

Do we really need plastic bags? Bill 2321, being heard THIS WEDNESDAY, October 7, would reduce single-use plastic bags on Kaua`i.

  • The County Council is hung-up on the definition of "biodegradable plastic", so why not follow Maui's footsteps and ban all single use plastic bags?
  • Many businesses around Kaua`i have already stopped using plastic bags, and many support this bill. If businesses encourage consumers to bring their own bags, they could actually SAVE MONEY!
  • The County, under an initiative by Mayor Carvalho, is distributing 25,000 REUSABLE bags for FREE around the island!
  • Transitioning is easy - keep re-usable bags in your car so you don't forget them!

WHAT'S YOUR OPINION? SUBMIT TESTIMONY BY WEDNESDAY: COUNCILTESTIMONY@KAUAI.GOV OR FAX (808) 241-6349

Volunteers Needed for Malama Kaua`i Projects!

We have two great projects that are ready to go but need a little assistance from excited volunteers!

Community Garden
We are set to do a ground breaking and blessing for the community garden in mid-November, but we still have two major installations to meet this deadline. First, we need help putting in the irrigation system and that means getting dirty with some trench and shovel work! Secondly, we need to fence the initial garden plot area, which totals about 1.5 acres.

If you don't have the time to participate on site, we still need to raise money for our final purchase of materials. If you can donate to the garden, please consider giving today. You can donate online through Paypal here. All contributions are tax deductible.

School Garden Network & Nutrition Program
Malama Kaua`i is looking for a few motivated volunteers to kick start the Kaua`i School Garden Network. Kaua`i's schools are at various stages - some have thriving gardens, some are just getting started, and others may not have given a garden a second thought. The Kaua`i School Garden Network will link up schools to facilitate sharing of resources and best practices, and offer assistance in the areas of development, training, fundraising, and curriculum. We are looking for a few good communicators that are excited about kids growing food and eating healthy, local meals.

To volunteer, contact Keone at keone@malamakauai.org.

Preparing for Tomorrow Through Responsible Actions Today

There has never been a more important time for change than now, in this very moment. Malama Kaua'i Green Business Program (GBP) offers locally owned, independent businesses the opportunity to join an exciting, fun program that provides support to community businesses looking to minimize their environmental footprint.  The GBP's goal is to help your business reduce waste and pollution while optimizing profits and customer relations.  We want to see Kaua'i's local economy flourish through sustainable business practices that support the 'aina and encourage increased community responsibility.  It really is that simple.

The GBP has teamed up with KIUC, the County Recycling Office, and the Office of Economic Development to provide your business with the adequate tools needed for a smooth transition into superior efficiency.  We offer a tiered level of green certification, providing assistance every step of the way.  Our basic Membership Tier requires that every business go plastic/styrofoam-free, and recycle.  In addition, if the business is a restaurant, it must purchase at least 25% local produce, when available, and if it is a office/retail business, it must use 30-100% recycled printing paper.

After completing these simple, profound steps, and paying the low membership rate of $100, good for one year, you will become an official GBP member, receive placement on our 2010 island-wide Green Map, and have access to a wide range of member benefits (too numerous to mention here).

It is time to let the community know of your commitment to environmental stewardship.  The GBP is a great way to receive increased community visibility, publicity, advertising, and customer loyalty.  Begin your journey today, laying the foundation for a better tomorrow.

waikiki floodHawai`i students to draw line on climate change:
Blue Line Project hopes to raise awareness of Hawai`i's vulnerability to climate change and need for international agreement on greenhouse gas reductions

Next month students will be literally drawing the line on climate change. Using blue chalk, students from schools statewide will the drawing a line that indicates the high tide level with a one meter of sea level rise. The purpose of the Blue Line Project is to highlight Hawai`i's-and other island nations-vulnerability to climate change while nations begin negotiations on a new international agreement to rein in the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change.

"This is an opportunity for students to be part of a critical moment in our history," said Jeff Mikulina, Executive Director of the Blue Planet Foundation. "The blue line represents the future we are leaving these students-and it may be the best case scenario unless a strong international agreement is reached this year."

The project, which will take place at locations statewide on Saturday, October 24, is part of a larger international effort on that day coordinated by an organization called "350.org." The 350.org campaign is intended to raise awareness for the most important number for the Earth's future, 350, which represents a "safe" target for the concentration of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere in parts per million (ppm).

locavore painaLOCAVORE PA`INA SEEKS FOOD DONATIONS

We are seeking locally-grown food donations for The Garden Island Range and Food Festival, Kauai's 1st Locavore Pa`ina.  This unique community event celebrates our great Hawaiian agricultural products that are showcased by our culinary magic. The Pa`ina will take place on November 15 at Kilohana Plantation.

The main goal of the event is to educate consumers about the quality of our Kaua`i agricultural products, and we are seeking contributions from local growers. Currently, we are surveying what is available and the quantities so that the chefs will have an idea of what they can work with.  As we get the quantities, we can define the produce list and coordinate with the chefs. The chefs are prepared to use their creativity in order to utilize whatever is available!

If you are able to donate any fresh produce to make this event a reality, please contact Karol Haraguchi at hvtaro@hawaiiantel.net
