Solstice. The ancient philosophy of `Aha and the principal practices of mälama or
responsible stewardship of Hawai`i's life-giving elements and sustainable resources
will used to navigate this 2-part program. How the ancients utilized the sacred
connections and nuances of `Aha to restore health, life and balance with seasonal
solstice and equinox alignments of the sun will also be shared.

fruit marketSummer Intern Needed for Kaua`i Agricultural Planning

I am a University of California, Berkeley graduate student in environmental planning and working on my thesis: planning for small-scale, diversified agriculture on Kauai. I will be working with Malama Kauai this summer, conducting stakeholder interviews and mapping existing farms/agricultural infrastructure. I'm looking for a college student with a car to intern as my research assistant. The work will take place from approximately early-mid July, until mid-late August and will require about 10-15 hours per week. The work itself entails driving to sites throughout the island to map farms/infrastructure and to conduct stakeholder interviews. As an intern, you will gain experience in GPS mapping technology and the exciting worlds of regional/environmental planning, sustainable agriculture and food systems. Compensation is offered for gas and mileage and I can provide you with an excellent reference when the field work is complete. If interested, contact: bojana.anglin@gmail.com.

Charter Review Commission, Special Committee on County Governance:
Informational Presentation on
County Manager form of Government

From Carol Ann Davis Briant, Member of the Kauai Charter Commission:
If you would like to learn about a different form of county government that would be more efficient and less costly please come  to this important meeting to be held on Monday,  June 15th,  at 6:00 pm at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall. The city/county manager form of government is presently functioning in 60% of all communities across the United States and 80% of all California cities. The guest speaker will be Mr. David Mora, an experienced county executive, and board member of the International City/ County Managers Association.

As some of you may know, my late husband Walter Briant was a strong advocate of the County Manager form of Government.  It is a very efficient way to manage the government. Walter felt that a trained person should be in charge of day to day and fiscal management of the government.  As manager of the Kauai Department of Water for its first formative 20 years, Walter saw the necessity of having the government run by a trained manager. This does not eliminate the need for a mayor but essentially changes some of the duties of that mayor.

The Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) program is authorized in Section 9007 of the 2008 Farm Bill.  REAP offers grants and/or loan guarantees for the purchase and installation of renewable energy generating systems, and for energy efficiency improvements.  Assistance is limited to rural small businesses and agricultural producers, including farmers and ranchers.  Non-profits and units of government are not eligible.  Residential use is not allowed.  Projects must be located in a rural area, which is all of Hawaii and the Western Pacific except the Honolulu Census Designated Place (CDP).  REAP grants and guarantees may be used individually or in combination.  Together they may finance up to 75% of a project's cost.  Grants can finance up to 25% of project cost, not to exceed $500,000 for a renewable energy system and not to exceed $250,000 for an energy efficiency project.  An applicant can even apply for both types of projects, obtaining a maximum grant of up to $750,000. money treeCreative Financing =  Creative Solutions

Take a fresh look at your financial condition and then consider some new solutions to those old problems.  The solutions might involve some new sources of income, some new business ideas and some new attitudes.

The Creative Financing Course offered at Kauai Community College this summer is designed to help you take a new look.  The Course is part of the Entrepreneurship Training Program based on the best resources gathered from MBA programs offered at America's leading universities. The skills, knowledge and techniques that characterize the most successful leaders of businesses and non-profit agencies are examined in this Course as the behavior patterns that produce positive results.  When these are adopted and applied, the conditions that comprise our current economic downturn can be transformed into opportunities for higher levels of progress.  You will learn how to design a fiscal management system that will strengthen your income, profitability and long-term success.  Developing new ideas for acquiring and managing funding will open the door for grants, loans, venture capital, investors and a wide variety of creative fund-raising ventures. Guest speakers will include bankers, investors, venture capitalists, and financial planners.  Individual consulting will be available during and following the course.

This 10-session course is held from 4:00 till 6:30 pm, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning June 16 thru July 16.  Tuition is $120 and scholarships are available.

You may register at the OCET office at KCC in person or with a credit card by phone 245-8318.
