Greetings!

We did it again. I took a couple of voiceover clients who weren't happy with where they were in December, just finished their demos and got the feedback that upon completion, one of them just got instant agency representation here in Southern California. It happens.

But you have to know where the markets of opportunity are, where the openings and expansions will be. I have been criticized for being the guy who wears the "black hat" in the media business as a forecaster, but that's handy when you're trying to avoid the rocks in shallow water. When I know I'm right, and my clients follow me, we get them where they need to go. That's simply following the curve of where this business is going. If you're trying to figure out which way the deck chairs are supposed to be pointing on the Cruise ship's bow, you don't need to take a seminar or panel from a "trends forecasting" collection of voice coaches and production shops. You do need to get together with someone who can produce you from a markets perspective, with great relations in their placement firms, and put you in the water where the current will be flowing fastest. Read on.

Voiceover Market Forecasts?
Ron Knight - Station Imaging & PromosThere's a reason that I've partnered with three agencies, one of which I have a vested interest in, to go into specific markets in Voiceover and Talent representation. It's because when other people are hoping to get a bunch of talent into a room and give 'em a seminar on what they should be doing this year, we already know it. Listen to me.

Most of the veteran "large earnings numbers" voiceover talent of yesteryear, came from an era where "the Big Screen" was the royal medium of choice. Audio as implanted "theater of the mind" became the most researched component to the point where producers and directors of motion pictures knew that the audio would be the most exciting, exhilarating component of the filmed cinema experience. Turn off the sound, and all of a sudden, a scary movie just isn't so scary. In multimedia CD ROMs of the 90's, the psychological imprint of audio was also measured quite often, and even for still picture sequencing, the producers of the multimedia interactive publishing world focused on audio as the way to bring higher production value and involvement into their otherwise slide-show or still frame based disc titles. Who is the target audience today, and what media are they using? SMS text based messaging users, the youngest adopters and now spreading "older" demographics, use the new media population of hand helds as the most important way to communicate in the fast paced SMS, 130 character or less Twitter and Social Media blips. This newest media audience, driven by producers in the thirty something age range, are all about the latest text blip personalized social media Twits. No audio in that.

Check your theater show times and go. I get it every week from my clients at AMC and the other theater chains. ATTENDANCE IS DOWN. Mobility is up... and in this text based world of new "I did it" "You did it" adopters, there is no theater of the mind driving audio as a master king emperor of impression. That means the world of Voiceover as we knew it, is fervishifritz. Cool word. I just mixed that up from watching Madeline Kahn on Blazing Saddles this past week. But you get it, if you get it.

That is why we started casting for the Emcees market and driving into gaming casinos and showrooms, driving our veteran talent with broadcast credentials into the game of being Emcees for branded shows. Our first 10 talent are getting shoveled into the buyers hands this week. In Voiceover, what is the remaining sole area that still needs to have Voiceover talent, and what is the single industrial area that's most inclined to GROW?

If you look at your marketing collateral, your demos, and haven't looked REALLY now, at who your most important customers, clients or prospects are going to be NOW - this year.. you may as well live to love your heartbreak. Hey. I get it. When I was doing national TV promos, I wished I was doing cartoon voiceovers the way I did. When doing Cinema, I wished I was back to being the Promos guy of yesterday. Here we are in the NEW WORLD, and we're riding the wave with these firm's talent production marketing investments. The most important thing is that if you want to continue doing Voiceover, you've got to go where the fish are biting, know what's important to these buyers, and address their needs in your demos - VERY specifically.

That's why instead of offering the regular first quarter demo production that you usually hear about from Knight Mediacom, I'm taking on just 6 clients in this new growth category for demo production, AND the market...  by sending them over to one of the agency reps for this very specific category of GROWTH that they have told me they are positioning for, and asked me to refer talent to - for their specific talent representation and marketing focus for this year.
The Power of E
I just got two calls. One from USC, the University of Southern California, and another from an another EL-Systems provider. To boot, when my last client in voiceover did her demos with me, and this one category got her in their door, I know this is right. I know Arnold Schwarzenegger thinks it's right and makes sense, because he governs a State which is on the Balls if its Ass, economically. I'm surprised California is still alive considering it's bankrupt.. I guess>!?#  But because it's out of cash, as is the rest of the economy in a slow conversion, this is the one area which has no choice but to grow; and it's as simple as moving the Woolly Mammoths off the cliff and into the graveyard, set up to be an ongoing exhibit BEFORE they perish. In Voiceover, this whole area needs soundtrack and as they say,

"It's Everywhere you Want to Be".
Right Tools, Right Place at the Right Time

Being armed for very specific niches and sub niches within the market, with very specific demos for producers in these areas, or moving swiftly into these areas - exemplifies a specialization, knowledge, experience and market awareness for these areas. As producers and clients  hear the audio collateral directly related to their market needs, and don't have to listen through "narration" demos for pieces that "sound like" or "maybe fits" from a regular industrial narration or corporate narration demo... those Voiceover talent that can show an area of expertise by this specialized demo, with a whole demo dedicated to nothing but this specific area of specialization, will be the ones picking up the work -

It is a choice.

I can guarantee those people who show a demo especially for this specific market, will exemplify their expertise, knowledge, client base

and the market savvy in this specific area...

and they'll pick up the core

if not more of the work.

I have room for just 6 of you in this new Voiceover area now.

Call me today at 310 779 9885, 619 573 9919 or email on the links below. We'll need to get your Voiceover Demo Order contracted by January 25th. Your produced digital demos will go back to you and will be submitted as well to the house agency who wants the referrals. This is not a guarantee for work nor representation. I am doing this because I know the agency, I have worked for them many times, the agency contacted me for talent in this genre, and to me...  it just makes sense for all involved.

Let's get it together and get on to a very productive 2010.

Sincerely,

Ron Knight - Station Imaging & Promos
