15 year old gets new hand in time for prom
New Hand

FREDERICK, Md. (WUSA) -- Wyzhir Johnson lost his hand in a home construction accident on Christmas Eve. Thursday, he received a prosthetic hand-- just in time for prom.

"This is a start to new beginnings," said Johnson.

The 15-year-old has a wide smile, and even though he experienced a traumatic event, he has stayed positive.

On Christmas Eve, Johnson was helping his family cut baseboards with a miter saw. He had done most the work on his own as a surprise for his family. As they came back home from a dinner, he went to finish the last piece.

"It caught my coat, and I tugged the saw, came down on top of me," he said he saw his hand fly off...

Bride Walks Down the Aisle at Wedding
Jen WalksJennifer Darmon walked down the aisle on her wedding day this weekend, which was a particularly moving moment since she has been confined to a wheel chair since a crippling car crash in 2008.

On Saturday, the radiant bride strode to the altar with the help of leg braces and a decorated metal walker. That short but momentous stroll came after years of intense therapy and a vow she made to ABC's "World News" March 25.

"You know, picturing your wedding, you don't picture rolling down the aisle," she said after she was chosen as the "World News" Person of the Week. "You picture the walk with your dad. It's the most important thing. I will be walking down the aisle. It's not an if or a maybe. It's absolutely going to happen."

Questions for the prosthetist/orthotist

Q: I have diabetes and I've already lost one leg and I am very worried about losing my other leg. What can I do to help make sure I don't?

A: If you have diabetes or peripheral arterial disease, proper foot care is an essential part of any management program designed to prevent the loss of a limb.  The following steps to washing your feet should be a part of your daily foot care program:

  • Wash your feet with warm water.
    • Washing your feet using hot water can be dangerous given the possibility of nerve damage. If you lose feeling in your feet, you may not notice scalding or burns from water that is too hot.
  • Use a mild soap.
    • Harsh soaps can irritate the skin, leaving you vulnerable to infection and skin ulcers.
  • Gently dry your feet with a towel, taking care to dry in between your toes.
    • Ensuring that your feet are completely dry after washing helps prevent the onset of bacterial infection that can lead to the loss of a limb.
