Mary Jeanne Johnson

I am a 64 yr. old right AKA. Prior to my amputation I was a
nurse diagnosed with P.V.D. During a routine surgical procedure for this
condition, I bled out and unexpectedly received a BKA. Being a diabetic my healing process failed
and three days later I was back in surgery for the doctor to amputate above the
knee. I felt by this time I had lost everything, my career, my independence, my
home, and my vehicle. I went through a divorce in a very short amount of time.
I then moved to Georgia to be with my son where he was able to help take care
of me.
While there in Georgia I was fitted with a C-Leg that I was never able
to adjust to. My son and I moved to Myrtle Beach , SC where I met Mr. Lyons. I
was fitted with a leg that I finally felt was a part of my body. I am able to
walk with my leg now and my confidence is growing stronger to know I will be
walking with a cane soon. Mr. Lyons and his staff have given me the one thing I
need to go along with having the proper leg with the proper fit that is my
confidence and my self worth that had been hidden for so long. The prayers and
support they have given me has made me realize that God will not lead me to it
unless He can see me through it. Thank you Mr. Lyons and staff for giving me
back my ability to become whole again through fitting me with the right
prosthetic and all the right prayers that I needed to become healthy
again. Thank you, Mary Jeanne Johnson Myrtle Beach South Carolina

Greetings!
Featuring 37 individual races at 19 Paralympic events, the 2010 U.S. Handcycling Series (USHCS) was announced by US Handcycling, a Colorado
501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
The series enters its 11th season as
North America's only integrated cycling series, putting athletes with
and without disabilities together at premier cycling competitions.
The
hotbed for North American handcycle racing continues to be the
Southeast, where traditional events like the Clocktower Classic
in Rome, GA and the Athens (GA) Twilight will again
host handcycling categories, in addition to new events like the Historic
Roswell, GA Criterium, the Lowe's Motor Speedway Time
Trial in North Carolina and... the Tour de LaFrance
in Anderson, SC.

1.4 Million Grant for Prosthetic Hands Research
| Idaho State University researchers are currently in phase two of a
multi-phase project, after they received an additional $1.4 million
grant from the U.S Department of Defense. The research is all to
help people with prosthetics. Most of us take things like picking
up a suitcase, to pouring a glass of water for granted. Brad
Gardner did, until he lost his arm,"you have no idea how much you use
something until you lose it." READ MORE

ACA Summer Camp for kids
|
The Amputee Coalition of America's Paddy Rossbach Youth Camp is a
5-day traditional summer camp experience for children ages 10-17 who
have lost arms and/or legs or who were born with limb differences. The
camp offers challenging activities that build campers? confidence
regardless of skill level.
A unique aspect of our program is that campers are not accompanied
by their parents, which inspires campers to take on new challenges, be
independent, test themselves and build new friendships in a supportive,
caring environment.

Ask Alex Lyons, CPO
| | Questions for the orthotist
Q. What are "orthotics"?
A. Commonly, people
will refer to "orthotics" as foot supports. In actuality,
"orthoses" are the devices that a person would use or wear
to enhance function or reduce or eliminate pain.
"Orthotics"
is the practice of using applied knowledge in the assessment
and fitting
of such devices.
