The Radical Adventure
Where does it say following Jesus was going to be easy. Jesus never said that. In fact, most references made in Scripture about that journey speak of leaving much behind, and living differently than you've been trained to live. A. W. Tozer wrote, "I dare say that Christians who have genuinely come to love and trust Jesus Christ have also renounced this world and have chosen a new model after which to pattern their lives." It's in that renouncing where we find much of the struggle.
Your old nature and the enemy don't want you to change. Oswald Chambers, writing of this journey said, "that's where most (Christians) faint and give way." Tozer continued, "Further, we should say that this is the aspect of Christian life that most people don't like. They want comfort. They want blessing. They want peace. But they recoil from this radical, revolutionary break in the world." Jesus said "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." (Matthew 10:34) I have this image of life walking with Jesus; it's a lot like being on the Bearing Sea with those guys from the Deadliest Catch. It's dangerous as heck, but a lot of fun and worth the adventure.
The key is understanding the dangers, paying attention to what's going on around you, and staying engaged at all times. The safe life is hanging out on the dock waiting for the boat to return. I watch that show and wonder if I could ever make it on one of those boats, and then I wonder; how much of my life do I live the same way? Can you identify with that?
