It Means To Conquer
Smokey the Bear used to say that. "Only you can prevent forest fires." And Jesus said only you can prevent spiritual decay in your own heart. "Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice, and opens the door, I will come in ... to him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne ..." (Revelation 3:20-21) Did you catch that? We get to share the throne with Jesus! ButFrom page 72
 | we must overcome. It takes sustained vigilance to overcome. Webster's says overcome means to conquer. You cannot conquer anything without prolonged, intentional effort. Yes, Scripture says we will have to face struggles in this world, but how much of the upheaval we face in our lives is because we neglected to "watch and pray;" because we neglected to feed our faith with the things that maintain it? Three times Jesus asked the disciples to "watch and pray," and three times they fell asleep. I often wonder what might have been different had they offered a sustained vigilance in prayer with, and for Jesus that night. I wonder how much of our life would be different if we would do the same.
