The Outer Life

Evelyn Underhill wrote, "After all, it is those who have a deep and real inner life who are best able to deal with the irritating details of outer life." How is your inner life these days? I went out to eat with my oldest son one evening last week to a restaurant often frequented by our local college students. I was young once, so I do sort of understand. But as a hopefully more mature adult, I was rather distracted and unnerved by the noise and the attention given to the matters of this world (the outer life). I cannot attest to the inner life of the individual patrons that evening obviously, but my perspective left me feeling disappointed. And my own inner spirit was unsettled by the bath of worldliness. Understand, I'm not proclaiming myself better than those folks; I don't know them, and I've got my own journey to attend to. But the environment they seemed to be so comfortable in left me feeling a bit troubled in that moment. John Eldredge wrote recently, "The world is an anthill after someone has given it a good kick. And the effect of this is utterly draining, body, soul, and spirit."

Restoration of spirit did come back to me that night pretty quickly after a good soaking in the Word followed by a few pages in my Oswald Chambers devotional. I guess the point here is, much of the details of outer life we come in contact with can be irritating as we try to walk this life out as a Christian. But it doesn't have to take us out of the game if we'll keep vigilant about our inner life. It's the life line for us as Christians in this world. Paul told us in the book of Ephesians, "Be strong in the Lord and His mighty power." How? "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." (Ephesians 6:10-18)And putting on the armor starts with sealing the inner gates of our soul with an inner relationship with Christ, the key to a deep and real inner life.
