A Mission Worth Taking
March 18th, 2010
By Greg Tutwiler, CCLC, BCPC
A friend said to me the other day, "why do you think there's so much turmoil in the world?" Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, "the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." (II Corinthians 4:4) Maybe you don't feel called to the world mission field. That's okay. One of the greatest mission fields today is outside your front door. Do all of your neighbors know the light of the gospel?

Why does it make more sense to take the gospel 6,000 miles away, but not 600 feet? There's nothing wrong with world missions; it was the last command of Jesus. But that command was issued from the Middle East, 6,000 miles from us. We're all ministers of the gospel. Let's live it! Let the light of the gospel in you shine. It just might be what the turmoil of this world needs. When you're standing in a dark room, someone needs to turn on the lights. We know where the switch is. Jesus said, "let your light shine before men." (Matthew 5:15) In a world dominated by negative media, and worldly distractions, somebody's got to stand up for what they believe in. We cannot afford to have the "not me" perspective anymore. What's holding you back? Not God. He's already spoken. If you're waiting on someone else, they're probably waiting on you.

Jesus brought His ministry to us here on earth. He set us free and then introduced us to a new way of life. Then He commanded us to take it out and spread it around. He said to His Father, "As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world." (John 17:18) Then He turns to the apostles and says, "As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." (John 20:21) But this was not just for the apostles. Luke tells us, "After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others, and sent them two by two ahead of Him to every town and place where He was about to go." (Luke 10:1) These were ordinary folks like you and me. And these guys were told to "heal the sick that are there and tell them, 'The Kingdom of God is near you.'"

For too long we as Christians have been passive in our faith. Maybe we really don't understand the incredible power Jesus has bestowed upon us. Maybe we're not really secure in our own beliefs. Maybe we fear rejection, judgment, and ridicule. Maybe the enemy has convinced us that we don't have anything to offer. Maybe we really don't think God wants us to participate in this ministry; it's for someone else "more qualified." God and His Word is bigger than all of that. Remember; "the god of this world (Satan) has blinded the minds of the unbelieving." Jesus handed His ministry over to us to make new disciples. When He departed, He left us with the Holy Spirit as a deposit, a guide, our strength, our motivation, our witness, our inner light and security to reach out on behalf of the Savior to a world in turmoil. Rise up into your glory, and embrace the mission before you. We have the hope this world is looking for.
