Winter Sun Safety?
Unlike UVB radiation that has lessened for the winter, UVA rays are still in full force all day... and all through the winter months. And, don't think being cold decreases the amount of UV rays you receive.
Many of you will be heading for the slopes to do some downhill skiing or snowboarding. You need to remember that for every 1000 feet in altitude UV radiation increases 4%.
Snowbirds are another concern in the winter. Millions of sun-seeking snowbirds are unknowingly jeopardizing their health. Take pale winter skin.... send it south where the sun is more intense ... possibly throw in some medications that heighten sun sensitivity...and, what do you have? A potentially lethal combination that could cause discomfort and worse, skin cancer or Malignant Melanoma.
In the cold weather we all tend to wear thick layers of clothing for warmth and these thick layers also protect against UV radiation. But what about the exposed areas of the face? Wearing a wide brimmed hat in the winter provides sun protection from overhead rays for your face, neck and lips. Additionally a wide brim hat keeps snow, sleet and rain off your head and out of your eyes. For reflective radiation (snow can reflect up to 88% of a full dose of radiation) be sure to wear a good sunscreen. (For those of you wintering in warm climates full body protection is recommended)
