Tech Spot
Kevin "Flash" Klump
Welcome to Tech spot. There are two purposes for
this column;one is to help clarify in
layman's terms some of today's technological terms, such as Wi-Fi and Blogging.
The other purpose is to give advice on what to look for when buying some of
these new fangled gadgets.
Now let's
get down to it.
In my last post we discussed, "What is Audio Streaming?" This
time we tackle the issue of converting from analog to digital. February 7, 2009 will be the day that Television changes as we know it. Here is some background from the Benton Foundation, http://www.benton.org/: The
nations 1,600 television stations are converting from traditional
analog technology to a digital television format. Digital television
(DTV) is a new, more efficient technology for transmitting and
receiving broadcast television signals. But DTV signals are not
compatible with todays analog TV sets in most American homes. Under the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the amount of spectrum given
to television station owners was doubled. The policy rationale for this
was to enable the stations to transition US consumers to digital TV
without interruption of analog broadcasts. But after ten years of
digital TV broadcasts, only a small number of US households have made
the switch to DTV, delaying the return of valuable spectrum that could
be used by emergency officials and auctioned to offset federal deficit
spending. So what does all this mean? Since the inception of Television, programs
were broadcast through signals over the air in analog form, much like a
radio station. Since 1996, television stations have been changing the
way they broadcast programs. Instead of using a signal, they now are
changing it over to computer language, much like a music, or Computer
software CD uses, and this is transmitted through the use of WI-FI
technology. What this means is, that when the change over- happens, TV's will no
longer be able to pick up TV stations through an antenna. Does this
mean your TV is useless? The answer is no for the following reasons:
1. There are converter boxes that can be hooked up to existing Analog TV sets to be able to access Digital TV broadcasts.
2. Analog TV's still can be used to watch DVD's and play video games.
So how do I get one of these converter boxes?
There is a coupon program in place to give the consumer a $40 discount when purchasing a converter.
Where do I buy a converter box?Most
major stores should have them in stock now. Converter boxes should be
available now. As of last year, they were supposed to be ready for
purchase in early 2008, which is now.
If you need more information about the switchover, and the coupon program, click here.

CARE-A-THON
2008 UPDATE
Does Fear keep you
from achieving great things for God. Carlye who listens to us in Gainesville, GA
told us that she always wanted to live a life of significance but never really
believed that God could use her or even wanted to. Her big breakthrough came
while listening to David Jeremiah's preaching series called Life Wide
Open. "The Holy Spirit used those messages to give me the confidence that I
no longer had to live a fearful life of mediocrity. You don't know how good it
feels to have a passion for serving others and I'm extremely optimistic that God
is going to use me in powerful ways. Thank you for airing Turning Point
and all the programs which other radio stations seem to shy away from." That's
why WRAF is here. To empower the body of Christ to know Him and make Him known
to a world that needs Good News. During our CARE-A-THON we are looking
for like-minded partners like Carlye who want to live passionate,
purposeful lives by being involved in the Lord's work. If that sounds like you
then let us know you are with us by becoming a monthly supporter of Toccoa
Falls Radio.
Care-a-thon 2008
concludes this Friday at 6 PM.

Gear Up! by Dr. David Jeremiah
Behold, I give unto you
power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy .
. . Luke 10:19 KJV

Reading
Matthew 7:24-25
Have you ever tried to picture what life would be like without the U. S.
military? A few words come to mind: insecurity, vulnerability, fear. The fact is
that we would not survive as a nation without our military men and women because
no matter how sincere some leaders are in their efforts to deal peaceably with
the enemy, there will always be another country ready to bring a fight to our
front door. We cannot rid the world of enemies simply by avoiding them; we must
have a defense in place.
The same is true of our
Christian faith; we must be prepared for opposition from our enemy, Satan,
because he is ready to wage war on us at any given moment, especially when God
is really working in our lives. And just as our brave men and women in uniform
are trained and ready to meet this country's opposition head on, we must spend
time training in the Word, learning how to defend and protect ourselves against
the wiles of the Devil.
It's like the Roman
strategist, Flavius Vegetius, said, "Let him who desires peace prepare for war."
So, put on the armor of God and gear up!
Carry the battle
to them. Don't let them bring it to you. Put them on the defensive . .
. Harry S. Truman
