CIRTA - Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority

Does your organization want more mass transit options in Indiana?

Organizations around the state are passing resolutions in favor of legislation allowing communities to vote in referendums on dedicated local funding for transit. The General Assembly needs to know that there is widespread support for referendum-enabling legislation. Your employer, volunteer group, religious congregation or other group can help show support by passing a resolution. Click here to see the list of groups that have passed resolutions and download a template for your group's use.

Additionally, over 2,400 Hoosiers have signed the petition showing their support for dedicated local funding for transit. If you haven't already, sign it now and share it with friends.

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee released a brief outline of a two-year transportation re-authorization proposal on July 19. Transit funding is also under discussion as part of the federal deficit reduction negotiations. The outcomes of these deliberations will directly impact transit services throughout Central Indiana. Read the latest American Public Transportation Association (APTA) legislative update for details and suggested actions.

More Central Indiana commuters are vanpooling

Earlier this month, 14 Plainfield residents who work at U.S. Defense Finance & Accounting Services (DFAS) worked with Central Indiana Commuter Services to form a vanpool to cut down on their commute costs. Each morning at 6:00 AM, the commuters meet at their park-and-ride location, the Wal-Mart in Plainfield, and drive in a 15-passenger van to the Major General E. J. Bean Center on 56th Street and Post Road. The group leaves DFAS every afternoon at roughly 3:30 PM and returns to Plainfield. Each commuter in the vanpool avoids putting around 1200 miles per month on their car's odometer, saving hundreds of dollars on fuel and maintenance expenses. Central Indiana Commuter Services also coordinates vanpools to Indianapolis from Fishers, Bloomington, Greenfield and other communities. Visit www.327ride.net to explore your options for vanpooling, carpooling and other commute alternatives.
