| IVF Industry unhappy with natural fertility treatment
We reported last week that a Galway fertility clinic had successfully published a paper on NaProTechnology, an exciting new fertility treatment that has been developed in the USA. The paper "Outcomes from Treatment of Infertility with Natural Procreative Technology (NPT) in an Irish General Practice," is the lead article for original research in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine.
Clearly the success of this treatment is not to the liking of the multi million euro IVF industry and the article has been disputed by Tony Walsh, director of the Sims Fertility Clinic in Dundrum, Dublin. He claimed the study was not scientifically sound and did not constitute proof that NPT gives comparable live birthrates to IVF. The clinic has sent a letter to the journal outlining its argument. |

Claims that European Court of Justice is operating beyond its mandate
The European Court of Justice needs to be stopped from undermining national jurisdiction, former German President Roman Herzog and Lüder Gerken, the director of the Centre for European Policy, have warned in a comment published by the EUobserver. The sharp words come in the wake of similar arguments coming from Denmark and Austria accusing the court of stepping beyond its bounds.
Several cases analysed by Mr Herzog prove, in his view, that the European Court of Justice "systematically ignores fundamental principles of the Western interpretation of law", that it "ignores the will of the legislator, or even turns it into its opposite" and "invents legal principles serving as grounds for later judgements". | |

Call for "Amnesty for Babies" for World day of Peace September 21st
The United Nations will celebrate "World Day of Peace" on Sunday next Sept 21st. "World Day of Peace" was originally established by the UN General Assembly in 1981 for the purpose of commemorating and strengthening of the ideals of peace. There are of course many kinds of violence present in our world which require our urgent attention, however the most insidious and unseen violence is that which is perpetrated against the innocent and vulnerable, that which is directed against unborn babies. Every baby counts, every life is a precious and unique gift, never to be repeated. Every baby, born or before birth, has an equal right to life with all other human beings, including his or her mother. Every pregnant woman knows that the baby she carries is a new human being. Medical science has also shown beyond any shadow of doubt that, from the moment of fertilization each newly formed human embryo has a unique, separate and distinct identity. European Life Network calls on Governments throughout the world to rethink this vitally important issue and beginning on world day of peace, to declare an amnesty for babies. The word amnesty comes from the Greek word amnestos, which means 'the forgotten ones'. Do we need to ask who the forgotten ones in our society are, who are excluded when it comes to human rights

EU to Extend Maternity Leave
A report by EUobserver says the European Commission intends to extend the minimum length of maternity leave from fourteen to eighteen continuous weeks, while ensuring a full salary. "Longer leave would have a positive impact on the mother's health in general," the draft commission paper, says, adding that full payment of wages or salary would prevent women from suffering financial losses during their time away from work. |
