Humanae Vitae 40 Years on
The landmark Papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (On Human Life) which was published by Pope Paul VI, 40 years ago this week has claims to being the most controversial encyclical of modern times. The encyclical which reaffirmed the Church's constant teaching on the regulation of births is perhaps the most misunderstood papal encyclical. It simply teaches the truth about human sexuality, a truth which was (and still is) unpaletable, a truth that became the spark which led to decades of doubt and dissent among many Catholics, plunging us into what Pope John Paul II so aptly called the "culture of Death.".The landmark Papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (On Human Life) which was published by Pope Paul VI, 40 years ago this week has claims to being the most controversial encyclical of modern times. Cardinal Keith O'Brien appeals to MP's to protect life
SPUC report that Cardinal Keith O'Brien, archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, Scotland, has highlighted the issues of abortion and embryo experimentation in the run-up to this week's by-election in Glasgow East, Scotland. Cardinal O'Brien said: "We are facing a crisis in society and we must ask ourselves is human life important to us or is it not?...[The Human Fertilisation and Embryology] Bill is a monstrous attack on human rights, human dignity and human life. ...MPs must search their hearts and their consciences in this extra time in which they have been given to decide whether or not the value of human life really matters or whether or not it is simply one more commodity to be cast aside in our throw-away society."
