In a set of focus groups the school has been conducting with new parents, I have asked new moms and dads about how they learned about Gateway School, and what they knew about our program and mission before applying. Gateway's parents are discerning in their choices, and particularly so when it comes to choosing the right school for their children. Among the factors they listed for why they selected Gateway School over other public and independent school options were the sense of community, the depth and breadth of our academic program, the strength of our faculty, and the emphasis on socio-emotional learning and the whole child.

Head of School Book Club  
Oct. 11th, 7-8pm

How does globalization affect education? How are are you preparing your child for the globalized world?


Come to the Head of School Book Club tomorrow (even if you haven't finished the book!) to discuss Dr. Zhao's book, "World Class Learners" and share your thoughts with Percy and other parents.
FALL FESTIVAL - THIS SUNDAY
Oct. 14th, 12 - 4pm


We are looking forward to seeing you at the Fall Festival.  
Come enjoy an afternoon of fun festivities, including:  Rock Wall/Bungee Jumper, Bubble Fun 101, Inflatable Obstacle Course, Face Painting and Henna Tattoos, Straw Treasure Hunt, Pumpkin/Cupcake Walk, Arts & Crafts, Games and Food.

Admission is FREE; you can buy tickets for activities and game booths. Please note that some vendor booths will be cash onlyThis event is open to the public so you can invite friends.
 
Please help us build our pumpkin patch by bringing a pumpkin to our lobby - all donations greatly appreciated!

8th Grade D.C. Fundraiser - Drive for Schools
Enter a drawing for a brand new car (Prius or Subaru Outback) or $25,000. Tickets are $5 each or 6 for $25. The car will be on display at the Fall Festival!
Day of the Dead/ El Día de los Muertos Community Celebration

This year Gateway School is collaborating with Gault Elementary and the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History to celebrate Day of the Dead!

October 10th, 3:30-6:30
Gateway Community Craft Party will be held in Patricia's Second Grade classroom where we'll make sugar skulls and other crafts for our school Ofrenda.

October 14th
Second Grade will host a Mexican Folk Art Booth at the Fall Festival to help contribute items for the Ofrenda.

October 17th
Gateway and Gault Elementary students will come together for a collaborative craft workshop, co-sponsored by Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. The workshop will be held at Gault Elementary and will feature middle school volunteers. The fruits of this collaborative workshop will be used to create a mini-Ofrenda to be displayed at the Museum from October 23rd - December 4th.

To RSVP for the Gateway Craft Party or to register for the Gateway/Gault Craft Workshop, please send an email to jessicadelgado@me.com. Registration for the Workshop will be limited to 15 Gateway students.

K-5 Goal Setting Conferences
Oct. 18th & 19th

Childcare is available.  Please sign up in the Main Office.  Childcare is free while you are at your conference, and additionally $7 per hour (max. of $50/day).
 
Admissions Open House
Oct. 17th, 9-11 am 

If you have friends or neighbors who are considering kindergarten or Middle School options for their children for next fall, please invite them to our first Open House on Wednesday Oct. 17th from 9-11 am. RSVP's recommended to colleen.sullivan@gatewaysc.org.
Book Fair - Oct. 18th & 19th
(during K-5 Goal Setting Conferences) 

Come to our Book Fair which coincides with our lower grade Parent/Teacher Conferences.

We're 36 days into the school year and our 2012-2013 Annual Giving Campaign "100% in 100 days" is underway. Look for the parent letter in the mail next week, and get ready to participate during Pledge Week, October 22-27th.  Help our school community reach 100% participation in this important Campaign that helps us complete the budget for this school year!

A presentation by the Energy Upgrade California Program.
 
Energy Upgrade California
is an alliance between the California Energy Commission (CEC), California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) and the investor-owned utilities to decrease our energy consumption across the state and lower the greenhouse gas emissions from the residential building sector. 
This program offers homeowners an opportunity to make their homes more comfortable and energy efficient by providing up to $4,000 in rebate money to help offset project costs.
