Welcome Back
Dear Parents, Welcome back to school. Fresh off of a relaxing Labor Day weekend, we begin this year full of hope, high expectations, and excitement for what the 2012 - 2013 school year will bring. We began our faculty meetings last week discussing Dr. Yong Zhao's book World Class Learners: Educating Creative and Entrepreneurial Students*, and what creativity looks like in our classrooms and ways in which our students are entrepreneurial. Entrepreneurship refers to an "individual's ability to turn ideas into action, and can help young people become more creative and self-confident in whatever they undertake." Dr. Zhao discusses different forms of entrepreneurship (e.g. political, social, and economic) and says that it is best understood as "a process that results in creativity, innovation, and growth." At a time when most educational reform is calling for more standardization, we are fortunate to be part of a school community that encourages creativity, values students' voices, and asks them to find solutions to some of our world's biggest problems. Many of our faculty confided that the reason they chose to teach in the first place was to make a difference in their students' lives and to empower them to change the world. Our teachers know how important is to open their students' hearts and minds so that they will care about changing the world and be prepared to do it. Their idealism and hard work is what allows our school to offer an enriched curriculum in an environment where every student is known and loved. On my 15th opening day, I am more excited than I have ever been - excited to see and talk with your children, and to work with our faculty to inspire the next generation of thinkers, leaders, artists, and entrepreneurs. Welcome back to what promises to be a great year at Gateway School. Warm regards, Percy *We hope that you will join the community at Dr. Zhao's address to the Santa Cruz community on Wednesday, February 20, 2012. We have copies of his book for sale on campus for the Head of School Book Club on Thursday, October 11th. |
