Percy's Blog - Graduation

As I was listening to our 6th and 7th graders rehearse this week for their performance at Thursday's graduation - a tribute to the class of 2012 - the following words from the song "Upside Down" by Jack Johnson kept repeating in my head.
"Round and round and upside down.
Who's to say what's impossible can't be found.
I don't want this feeling to go away
Please don't go away.
Please don't go away
Is this how it's supposed to be?
Is this how it's supposed to be?"

Mindfulness Blog

Our Mindful Year: A look at practice around Gateway
At the close of this year I look back and quietly celebrate all of the laughter and learning, the many joyful ah-ha moments, as well as some frustrating ones. I see how the practice of stopping, noticing, and paying attention to the moment has woven its way into our lives.
In my classroom we practice mindfulness almost every day in a formal way. My teaching assistant, Val, and I notice that the practice noticeably changes the feeling in the room. There's a grounded calm, and a sort of quiet readiness that is palpable. I also notice that in those frustrating moments, or the super exciting ones, the students are becoming more ready, willing, and able to stop, take a breath, and notice what they feel, before moving on.
Here's how mindfulness has looked in other classrooms around our school:
