Percy's Blog - Learning on the Edge
As part of our faculty professional development system, I conduct a series of formal observations of teachers throughout the school year. These formal observations, and the informal drop-ins that accompany them, offer a window into our teachers' work with your children, the preparation that goes into crafting an engaging lesson, and the high level of expertise and professionalism that our teachers bring to their work. At a K - 8 school, I am exposed to students' working through various academic challenges, from early literacy skills to complex geometric proofs. At times one can forget how difficult it can be to acquire process, synthesize, and incorporate new material. Click here to read more. |

Dr. Dan Siegel in Santa Cruz
In January, our community discussed Dr. Siegel's latest book, "The Whole-Brain Child" in our Head of School Book Club gathering. In Febraury, Gateway School hosted Dr. Dan Siegel for both a teacher in-service session, and an evening presentation to parents and community members in Santa Cruz. Dr. Siegel's work in child psychiatry, neuroscience and parent education provided the background for a fact-filled and fun exploration of how the brain works and how encouraging integration within the brain is crucial for developing compassionate, empathic, focused and resilient children.

Mindfulness in our Classrooms
In winter 2011 we embarked on a journey to become a mindful school community. Our teachers and students were trained by Mindful Schools staff for 8 weeks, and students and teachers learned together about bringing mindfulness into the classroom in both formal and informal ways. Mindfulness awareness practices are explored as part of our social-emotional learning curriculum. We asked our 1st, 3rd and 7th grade faculty members to share ways that they are applying brain research and mindfulness practice in their classrooms during the current school year.
First Grade - Rachel Sattinger "In the fall, several faculty attended the Mindfulness in Education conference in Oakland. I was introduced to a beautiful book Anh's Anger, by Gail Silver with illustrations by Christiane Kromer, the story of a young boy who gets angry when he is asked by his grandfather to clean up his blocks and come to dinner. Grandfather asks Anh to go to his room and sit with his anger. The lovely illustrations in the book show Anh and his Anger singing, dancing and stomping their feet together until finally his Anger tires out and they are able to sit together and breathe. First graders, being the concrete thinkers that they are, were really able to identify with the idea of anger personified. We decided to draw our anger." On the right is one student's drawing which he explained like this: "This is my anger. This red person is me sitting and doing mindful breathing. The red arrows show my anger getting smaller." Third Grade - Kaia Huseby
 | | Third graders transform their classroom into a wetland for Ocean Day. |
"During this very busy week of preparation for Ocean Day, our classroom is gradually being transformed into a wetland, so the practice of mindfulness was essential for many reasons. First of all, the room does not look like a "regular" classroom any more, so extra effort had to go into focusing on multiplication when one's desk is surrounded by cattails! While we continued to have our formal mindfulness times where everyone finds a spot around the room to sit or lie down quietly, we also tried our best to work with others as mindfully as possible as we created our wetland creatures. We had to share supplies and exercise patience when the stapler wasn't available exactly when we needed it, for example. I noticed that students enjoyed having a choice over which type of wetland animal they created; they became emotionally invested in the project this way and cared more deeply about the outcome. I also learned a lot about my students through this type of hands-on project." Seventh Grade - Johaan Ryberg

students exercises to reduce stress before taking tests. "As we approach exams we are doing mindfulness based activities that have the objective of lowering test anxiety. These include relaxed posture, "breathing away" stress and anxiety and "breathing in" ease and peace. Also at the end of tests we practice putting our pencils down and acknowledging that we did our best."

Gateway Alumna visits Middle School
 | |
Middle School students with alumni Sierra Tobin and Spanish teacher Patty Lucas.
|
Gateway alumna, Sierra Tobin, Class of 2009, returned to Gateway recently to speak to the 7th and 8th graders about her transformative community service trip to Costa Rica. Sierra spoke eloquently about her experience - ALL in Spanish (muy impresionante!) and the students had to use their Spanish to ask Sierra about the trip. Muchas Gracias Sierra! What a fun way for all to practice our Spanish language skills.
