Percy's Blog
A Little Dewey in Santa Cruz Among the many wonderful experiences I had during my during my two-week fellowship at Teachers College at Columbia University, the most inspiring ones came from a class on the Philosophy of Education that allowed me to re-visit the works of John Dewey for the first time in over 10 years. John Dewey was our first public intellectual to write about education and its public purpose. He was as prescient as he was prolific. Dewey was among the first to discuss the moral principles and ethical aims of a public education system which was originally formed to ensure a stable, prepared, and some might argue compliant, workforce. Taking care of your anger: A book review
In the fall a few of us attended The Mindfulness in Education Conference in Oakland. I was introduced to two really beautiful books, both by Gail Silver, with illustrations by Christiane Kromer. The first, Anh's Anger is the story of a young boy who is asked by his grandfather to clean up his blocks and come to dinner. Anh wants to keep building and he gets angry that grandfather has asked him to stop. He gets so angry, in fact that tears come and he knocks over his building. Grandfather asks Anh to go to his room and sit with his anger. In his room Anh imagines his anger as a dragon-esque character with a sharp tongue and fiery sort of presence. The lovely illustrations in the book show Anh and his Anger singing, dancing and stomping their feet together until finally his Anger tires out and they are able to sit together and breathe. Once they've calmed down Anh continues to breathe and breathe and breathe some more until his anger gets smaller and smaller and dissipates completely. We learn from Anh that breathing mindfully is one way to take care of our anger.

Financial Aid 2012-13
Financial Aid for the 2012-2013 School Year: Financial Aid application season is now open. On the Tuition and Financial Aid page of our website ( www.gatewaysc.org), you will find information that explains the application process. Instead of using the SSS system to process financial aid applications, as we have for the last several years, we are now using the FAST (Financial Aid for School Tuition) system. We believe this will provide an easier and less time-consuming application process for parents. Our website page has a link to the FAST application system.
In order to apply for aid, you must file an online application through FAST and you must mail to FAST a copy of your complete 2011 tax returns. We recommend that parents start preparing now to get their 2011 taxes done as early as possible during the month of February 2012. The deadline for completing your FAST application is February 15th and the deadline (postmark date) for mailing your tax return to FAST is February 24th. As long as you meet these deadlines, your application will be considered for the first round of financial aid awards (the round in which the bulk of our financial aid budget is awarded). If you are divorced, separated or never married, please be aware that each parent must file a separate FAST application and each parent must submit a copy of his or her complete 2011 tax returns to FAST. Please contact Rima in the Business Office at x 308 if you have any questions.
