Percy's Blog - Learning about
"The Whole-Brain Child"

I want to thank the parents, faculty, and staff for attending the Head of School Book Club on Wednesday, January 18th, to discuss Dr. Dan Siegel's The Whole Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind, Survive Everyday Parenting Struggles, and Help Your Family Thrive. The conversation was lively and insightful, and the company was delightful.

EAP Meeting - Jan. 31st, 3:30 - 5:30

Gateway School's Environmental Advisory Panel meeting will be held Tuesday January 31st, 3:30-5:00,  in the library.
Seasonal snacks are always served!

Now that our school is Green Certified, where do we go from here?  How can we continue to green Gateway?  What is our  next campaign for 2012?

Come to the January 31st meeting to give your ideas for the next focus.  Some possibilities are to continue our work drafting a food policy proposal, plan future waste reduction activities and gather new ideas for 2012.

Please contact Caprice at 479-4769 or caprice.potter@gatewaysc.org  with any questions and to get on our email list.
Jon Kabat-Zinn and Dr. Dan Siegel

We are truly fortunate to have two internationally known speakers in the bay area during February. Plan ahead to attend and also please share these announcements with friends.

Friday February 17th - plan to be in Berkeley for this unique fundraising benefit event for Mindful Schools.
Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, the renowned mindfulness teacher, author, and founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) will present "The Role of Mindfulness in Education" at UC Berkeley's Zellerbach auditorium on Feb. 17, 2012.  It will be the first time Dr. Kabat-Zinn is giving a full public talk on mindfulness and education.

All ticket proceeds will benefit Mindful Schools programs, so we encourage you to make plans to carpool with friends to this illuminating event.

Wednesday February 22nd - plan to be a Cabrillo College to hear Dr. Dan Siegel will speak about "The Whole-Brain Child: 12 strategies to nurture your child's developing mind".

Financial Aid 2012-13

Financial Aid for the 2012-2013 School Year:
Financial Aid application season is now open.  On the Tuition and Financial Aid page of our website ( www.gatewaysc.org), you will find information  that explains the application process.  Instead of using the SSS system to process financial aid applications, as we have for the last several years, we are now using the FAST (Financial Aid for School Tuition) system.  We believe this will provide an easier and less time-consuming application process for parents. Our website page has a link to the FAST application system.

In order to apply for aid, you must file an online application through FAST and you must mail to FAST a copy of your complete 2011 tax returns.  We recommend that parents start preparing now to get their 2011 taxes done as early as possible during the month of February 2012. The deadline for completing your FAST application is February 15th and the deadline (postmark date) for mailing your tax return to FAST is February 24th.   As long as you meet these deadlines, your application will be considered for the first round of financial aid awards (the round in which the bulk of our financial aid budget is awarded). If you are divorced, separated or never married, please be aware that each parent must file a separate FAST application and each parent must submit a copy of his or her complete 2011 tax returns to FAST. Please contact Rima in the Business Office at x 308 if you have any questions.
