Percy's Blog - Homework,  Learning & Brain Science

I was helping a young girl with math homework this week - for the sake of this article, let's call her Laudia - who was becoming increasingly exasperated with a particularly problem.   In her frustration she exclaimed, "I'm no good at math."  This particular refrain raised my ire as a parent and an educator.  I have seen "this child" complete problems in the past that required a solid conceptual understanding of math. So what was it about this particular homework assignment that was giving her trouble?

Gateway Middle School
Information Night
Wednesday Nov. 16th, 6:30pm
Bring a friend...win an iPad!

Take advantage of this once-a-year opportunity to look forward to the middle school years.  Curriculum presentations from faculty, alumni panel discussion, performance by Glee Club elective class.  Come find out why Gateway's Middle School program is so exemplary.

To encourage Gateway families to help us get non-Gateway 4th-6th grade parents to come see this presentation and consider enrolling in our Middle School, we are holding a drawing for a new iPad!  Any Gateway parent who brings a non-Gateway 4th-6th grade parent to this Info Night will be entered in the iPad drawing.  Questions? Contact Colleen at ext. 302.

Zero Waste Lunch Challenge - Tuesday Nov. 15th

Gateway School is participating in a Zero Waste Lunch Challenge, an event sponsored by the City of Santa Cruz on November 15, 2011.  All students are asked to bring lunches with zero waste (i.e., items that can be eaten, reused, recycled, or composted, and as few items as possible that must be thrown away in the trash).

We think it is important to teach our students resource conservation. By participating in the Zero Waste Lunch Challenge, our students become more aware of how they can reduce waste at school, and reduce the amount of garbage headed to the landfill.  Help us meet this challenge!

Mindfulness Blog - To Flip or Not to Flip, that is the Question?
Rachel Sattinger, 1st Grade Faculty

Have you ever "flipped your lid?" Gotten really angry and reacted in a way that you later regretted? I'll admit it. I have. As it turns out I'm not totally responsible! Wow! What a relief to know that! Ok...ok...so that's not really the whole story. Let me back up and begin at the beginning. With the brain.

Check it out in the diagram below.
