Percy's Blog - Homework, Learning & Brain Science
I was helping a young girl with math homework this week - for the sake of this article, let's call her Laudia - who was becoming increasingly exasperated with a particularly problem. In her frustration she exclaimed, "I'm no good at math." This particular refrain raised my ire as a parent and an educator. I have seen "this child" complete problems in the past that required a solid conceptual understanding of math. So what was it about this particular homework assignment that was giving her trouble? Zero Waste Lunch Challenge - Tuesday Nov. 15th
Gateway School is participating in a Zero Waste Lunch Challenge, an event sponsored by the City of Santa Cruz on November 15, 2011. All students are asked to bring lunches with zero waste (i.e., items that can be eaten, reused, recycled, or composted, and as few items as possible that must be thrown away in the trash).
We think it is important to teach our students resource conservation. By participating in the Zero Waste Lunch Challenge, our students become more aware of how they can reduce waste at school, and reduce the amount of garbage headed to the landfill. Help us meet this challenge!

What a relief to know that! Ok...ok...so that's not really the whole story. Let me back up and begin at the beginning. With the brain.
Check it out in the diagram below.
