GPA NEWS At last night's final all parent GPA meeting, Percy thanked the GPA executive committee members for their service this past year. George Delli-Santi, Sheri Corona, Naomi Bendiner Woldemar, Michele Darnell, Lara Marotta and Mercy Wilson all served on the executive committee overseeing the many GPA events and activities this past year! George was traveling and not able to make the meeting, so Naomi represented the executive team in thanking all the Gateway parents for the many ways they help by assisting with their time and talent during the school year. Plans are being made for next year and Naomi invited those who are interested in being involved in any leadership roles to contact one of the current executive committee members or Andrea Hultzen who is the in-coming President for the 2011-12 school year. Current officers are considering their ability to continue and/or share the leadership roles as "co-coordinators," so any interested parents are encouraged to explore how they might be able to help next year. There are small roles (from one-time date specific tasks for an event) and bigger roles such as coordinating an event, so the team is interested in encouraging involvement at a level that works for the particular parent. Please contact Andrea, Naomi, Mercy, or Michele with any questions or interest in helping out for next school year.

Last Day of School Events
Please join us on Thursday, June 10 for the final day of school events. The Parent Coffee at 8:00am is hosted by the Gateway faculty to thank parents for all they do for the school. Step-Up Ceremony is from 9:00 - 9:45, and parents are invited to join us for this all-school celebration. Students representing each grade speak about the year, and the students sing to commemorate them stepping up to the next grade. 8th Grade Graduation Ceremony begins at 1:00pm. Parents are invited to celebrate the graduates, hear them reflect on their experiences through their speeches (each graduate makes a speech), and wish them well on the next step of their journey. Camp Vision:
Camp Vision works to improve the self-esteem of campers ages 10-14, with learning and/or attention difficulties, through a mentoring relationship with counselors who also have learning disabilities and/or ADHD. Art empowerment and independent learning projects help campers gain self-advocacy skills and a sense of community that is imperative to success both in and outside of the classroom. SUMMER READING FOR PARENTS
Save the Date: Head of School Book Club Tuesday, October 11, 2011
While you are in the aisles of Bookshop Santa Cruz, Logos, or your local public library selecting books from your summer reading lists, I am hopeful that you will pick up a copy of Best Friends, Worst Enemies: Understanding the Social Lives of Children by Dr. Michael Thompson, Catherine O'Neill Grace, and Dr. Lawrence Cohen. Best Friends discusses the "topic of bullying and weaves it into a broader study of children's friendships."
The authors "present a developmental perspective as they describe how children's social lives emerge from toddlerhood to adolescence. The book concludes with advice to teachers and parents on how to improve social life in schools and to support children's friendships and provides a useful perspective on a critical aspect of adolescent development."
I hope that you will join the community in reading this important book about children's interactions and how we as adults can encourage positive behaviors and relationships at home and at school.
