Auction Gala IMAGINE a success!

Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who spent months planning this amazing event.  The auction gala was superb this year, and thanks to the hard work of our volunteers, we were able to reach our goal.  This year, Gateway
School donated a portion of auction proceeds to Beach Flats Community Center, a community and family resource center in the heart of the largely low-income, Latino neighborhood of Beach Flats.

Thanks to the grandparents who supported our event and/or shopped in our on-line auction.

New MINDFULNESS PROGRAM

Thanks to generous support from our parents, we just finished an 8-week in-classroom training program for students and faculty in Mindfulness techniques, taught by trainers from the Oakland-based organization Mindful Schools. www.mindfulschools.org

We view mindfulness as a component of our Social Emotional Learning curriculum, which helps teach students self-awareness, empathy, and an understanding of their relationship to others. There is a body of research from the past few decades on mindfulness used in the medical field to help patients in reducing stress and working with chronic pain or illness. While mindfulness practices have only recently been introduced in the field of education, recent advances in brain research and early evaluations of mindfulness in education point to many potential benefits to teaching these techniques to children.  The lessons included mindfulness of breathing, walking, movement, hearing, eating, and heartfulness practices.

Mindfulness can help students learn better impulse control, improve focus and attention and reduce stress, all of which can impact academic achievement. It also can help develop greater empathy which improves interpersonal relationships.

Gateway School is hosting a Mindfulness Fundamental class for adults, taught by Mindful Schools, this summer. The 6-week class meets on Thursday evenings from 6 - 8 pm on campus. To register go to http://mindfulschools.org/training/
