Zero Waste Lunch Day - TODAY!
Gateway School participated in a Zero Waste Lunch Challenge, an event sponsored by the City of Santa Cruz. Students were asked to bring lunches with zero waste. On Friday, a team of student volunteers weighed our trash, and compared it to today's trash. We reduced our trash by one third (from 6-1/2 lbs. to 4-1/2 lbs!).
Thank you to 4th and 8th grade students who helped with trash weighing: Malena, Zoey, Victoria, Chloe, Ryan and David. Thank you to the 5th grade students who helped educate other classes on zero waste lunch: Malena, Hanna, Carly, Ruby, Lucy, and Daniela. Thank you to 3rd graders who helped at the trash cans: Aya, Clara, Truth and Yssy. And thank you to Mary Simmons (the city public works waste reduction specialist), and to parent volunteers Elizabeth Borelli and Joanna Blattberg for your help in planning and executing this important challenge!

Mindfulness Training Update
The in-classroom Mindfulness practice training finished yesterday as our trainers from Mindful Schools wrapped up their 8-week training program. Faculty and students filled in evaluation forms and we held our final Parent meeting with one of the trainers, Carla.
Faculty will be looking at ways to integrate both formal and informal mindfulness practice into each of their classrooms in an ongoing way. And additional training sessions for teachers and one for parents are scheduled for this summer and fall.
If you would like to help support this training for our students and faculty, you can make a tax deductible donation of any amount by writing a check or donating on-line. Click here to Donate On-line. We appreciate any size donation. Thank you!
Also if you'd like to know more click here for links (in the green "post-it" box) about Mindfulness practice at Gateway .
Mindful Schools is offering a 6-week Mindfulness Fundamentals class July 7- Aug 11, 6 - 8 pm here on the Gateway campus. This is an opportunity for parents and teachers from the Santa Cruz area (this is open to individuals within, and beyond, the Gateway community) to learn the basic techniques of a mindfulness practice.
